Show REQUIRED READING FOR THE KREMLIN There's a remarkable industry in the USA which rarely ains the headlines. It has no board of directors, no stockholders, no visible profits. And yet it's the fastest-growing business in the nation! Certainly, all of us are aware why research, like, Topsy, is growing so fast. It pays off. Funds invested in research produce traceable returns in better products and competitive products. prod-ucts. And one more thing is for sure the billions spent by American industry on research are directly di-rectly responsible for the swift rise in the American Amer-ican standard of living. Incidentally, the rate of growth is astounding. astound-ing. Back in the Roaring Twenties, American business spent less than $100 million a year on research and development. Now, in the Soaring Sixties, research is costing cost-ing about $12 billion annually as much as the whole national output in 1890! Thousands of new opportunities are being provided by research. Rockets, space exploration explora-tion and electronic brains are adding exciting new possibilities. They can be preludes to further fur-ther growth if we are all determined that it shall be. Each of us can help to bring this about if we recognize that our own future is bound up in the welfare of all. |
