Show IMPERIAL RESCRIPTS 1 > Bismarcks Great Services to Germany Ger-many Kecognized TH EMPEROR AiD JULES SIMON Have a Long TalkThe French Statesman Decorated by William The AlsaceLor aiiine Matter Touched on BERLIN March 20A snecial edition Ox Rciusauzfflcr contains an imperial rescript cordially thanking Bismarck for his ser rices and appointing him Duke of Lauen J burg colonelgeneral of cavalry and field marshal general Also appointing Count Herbert Bismarck adinterim minister of foreign affairs and General von Caprivi chancellor and president of the Prussian ministry The Xattonal Gazette says the Emperor in a long lettr to Bismarck extols his services ser-vices t the state and expresses profound personal gratitude The Kruczzcitung says General von Cap rivi accepted the chancellorship after two weeks negotiations Bismarcks acceptance of a dukedom the offer of which by William I he repeatedly declined has occasioned surprise In the Emperors first rescript he says according to the request made on the 18th inst he grants Bismarck permission to retire re-tire hoping confidently that the fatherland will profit in the future as it hasprfited in the past by his counsel energy and faithful devotion The Emperor says he regards it a the most providential dispensation of pis life that on several occasions he has d Prince Bismarck by his side What ILe prince has achieved for Prussia and Germany and what the prince has been t him and his predecessors he will ever preserve in grateful remembrance Bismarcks wishes and energetic policy of peace by which his majesty is resolved to DC guided in the future being fully con rinced of its correctness will always be remembered abroad and well deserves recognition re-cognition It is not in the Emperors power to reward Bismarck for his ser t rices but as a sign of his lasting thanks he confers upon him the dignity of Duke of Lauenburg and presents him with a life size oil painting of himself In the second rescript the Emperor hanks Bismarck as a military leader for h invaluable services in the army during the time of William 1 and t the present lay adding he knows he will be at one A with tho army by retaining Bismarck in the highest rank by appointing him fieldmar hal general and colonelgeneral of cavalry The rescripts abound In affectionate expressions expres-sions of regard and conclude God bless ou ny dear prince and grant that you may have many years of untroubled old age brightened by the consciousness of duty truly fulfilled |
