Show Tunnels on the Central Pacific When the idea of boring tunnels below the deep snow line on the Cerftral Pacific was first mooted it was looked upon generally as considerable con-siderable of a fairy story but now there is every reason to believe that such a move is very seriously seri-ously contemplated The expense will of course bo enormous but such a move would greatly reduce the steep grades which now contribute con-tribute to the expense of operation The projectors pro-jectors propose to begin their boring at least one thousand feet below the deep snow line This will bring the mouth of the tunnel about two thousand feet abovo the Truckee river The start will be made at Cold Spring cafion just west of the town of Truckee Gal and the tunnel will come out of the mountains on the Pacific side at Yuba river canon After leaving the first tunnel which will bo five miles in length it is proposed to run down the Yuba canon for some distance and then five more miles of tunneling will be done The grade will be a gradual des out so that when the train leaves the mouth of the last tunnel it will be level with Sacramento city and a rise of 1000 feet will bo saved on each side of the mountain In addition to this the saving of time will be of great value to those traveling over the road The railroad itself will reap the benefit not only from the increased traffic but in the matter of saving fuel and wear and tear on their engines The heavy mountain engines will be dispensed with and the traveler will not have occasion to fear delay from snow blockades |
