RETIREMENT 'Gianni Schicchi' is one of two operas being petformed this week at SUU. Left to right are Shanda Caldwell, Nate Hancock, and Brian Barney. A littl·e taste of Italy takes the stage BY HEIDI ROWLEY JOURNAL STAFF WRITER The SUU Opera Theatre Program will perform two oneact operas back-to-back this week. The operas Gianni Schicchi and Sour Angelica are two of three one-act operas called the Trittico written by Giacomo Puccini. Puccini was an Italian composer who wr6te such famous operas as La Boheme and Madame Buttetfly. The Trittico usually takes three hours to perform , wh ich is why one of the operas has been cut. Gianni Schicchi is a comedy; the only comedy Puccini wrote. It involves a family who is fighting over an inheritance. However, they come to find the inheritance has been donated to an order of friars. "This is truly an ensemble oriented opera ," said Carol Ann Modesitt, head of the opera program . "I feel that this is a Puccini mini-masterpiece, and one which has a story that is relevant to today." Gianni Schicchi is placed during the Italian Renaissance and is based on the relatives of the famed Italian author, Dante. The ·second opera has a dramatic or tragic story line. Sour Angelica takes place in a cqnvent. Angelica was placed in a convent because she had a One of the fastest ways to build a retirement nest egg is through tax-deferred Supplemental Retirement Annuities (SRAs) from TIAA-CREF. ;i '- .. ~ TRUST SERVICES TUITION FINANCING IT'S EASY TO SAVE MORE THROUGH THE POWER OF TAX DEFERRAL $102,068 Your funds are automatically decfucted from your paycheck. so it's easy to build income to supplement your pension and Social Security.* Especially since your SRA contributions grow undiminished by taxes until you withdraw the funds. The story takes place seven years later when Angelica learns what happened to her child after she left. Sour Angelica is unique because of its all-female cast. Modesitt said most operas contain more male parts than female parts and she chose these two operas to show off the variety of female vocal talent at SUU . It also gave the females more chances to perform. She also chose the two operas because they show two different types of opera. "[The operas] allowed the best of both worlds. If you want to laugh, you can laugh , if you want to cry , you can cry ," Modesitt said. Students have been rehearsing the vocal parts for four months and the acting for almost two months. Most operas take a year of rehearsal before they are performed. Another unique modification to this performance is the lack of an orchestra. Two pianos will be used instead. Rehearsal with an orchestra takes added time that was not available this year. The operas will take place in the Auditorium Theatre Feb. 21-24 at 7:30 p.m. Both operas wi ll be performed in English. 8~!e;rfe;,,._ce; f~~fvf,,._3! • Tandem and Solo Freefall Training (435) 986-8461 Sn1111 ,~ INSURANCE Ensuring the tutu e for those who shape it."' reddy@infowest.com 30YEARS In lhi, hypothetical ex.ample. setting aside S 100 3 month in a ta1,-<!e(crnd investmelll with an 8% return in a 28% tall bracket-1hows better growih than the same net amount put imo a savings account.
