Show !THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2001 SPJ club comes to SUU BY U SA GRADY JOURNAL STAFF WRITER A new club on campus offers valuable experience for journalists from any medium. The Society of Profess ional Journalists club was founded this semester am.I ~s still in the planning stages. Officers--were elected in the meeting on Feb. 5. Thomas Burr, a junior commun ication major from Salina . Utah, will serve as president, Camery Lybbert, a senior communication major from Moses Lake , Wash ., as vice president , Jane Clark , a junior math education major from St. George, as secretary , and . Paige Hendrickson , a senior communication major from Toquerville, Utah, as treasurer. Paul Husselbee, associate professor of communication, will serve as the club's adviser. There are currently 26 members of SPJ , and "there are a lot more communication students who could benefit from this club ," Burr said , "thi s is not just a newspaper club ." In additi on to the four previously mentioned officers, SPJ will have three delegates serving on the executive , ,, IT . - -· PAGES UNIVERSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS NEWS comm ittee , one from each of the main journalism organizations on campus : Power 91 , SUTV and the University Journal. The Society of Professional Journalists is the largest journalism organization in the nation , according to th.e SPJ web site , offering students the necessary skills to take control of their journalism career. SPJ is not just a local club, it is involved nationally and professionally , Burr said , and can serve as a springboard to other positions. The club plans to host guest speakers, including James E. Shelledy, editor for The Salt Lake Tribune, said Burr. In addition , SPJ plans to attend a regional conference this March which takes place in Logan , Husselbee said. · Support for the club has been positive so far. "We have long needed to participate in this organization, and now, at last, we will ," said Frain Pearson , department chair for communication. • It is certain this organization will become an influential group on campus," said Pearson . The graduation address will be selected by a student & faculty paner from the applications received. Finalists will be invited to present their address to the panel. A $300 cash award will be given to the recipient of the student graduation speech honor. Proposed student graduation addresses, along with a brief resume, should be submitted to the Vice President for Student Services Office no later than Friday, March 9th.
