The center, which is located at 43 S. 200 West. has been notified by the Cedar City fife marshal that children are not allowed on any level but ground level. "There is nothing wrong with the-home that would make it be condemned. " said Beverly McGarvey, SUU child care director. · 1wouldn't say· condemn is the right word . I would say it was a matter of miscommunication.· McGarvey said miscommuniation stemmed from differing interpretations of the state fire code for preschoolers-the house was reconditioned in the past to meet those codes , but were later interpreted differently by a new fire marshal. The basement is now considered to have not met the fire code . The center can handle as many as 28 children at one time with access to the basement as well as the main level. "With us only allowed to use the main level, we will have to cut back the number of children we can handle at one time to 21 : McGarvey said. However, the problem with the basement is only half the problem. "This property is part of the Shakespearan Festival expansion plan, which means this building will be torn down," McGarvey said. With the problems currently facing the center, McGarvey is hoping to move to a different location. "We would like to be on campus." she said. "We are asking for space in the old Physical Education Building.· There would be advantages to such a move. •At our current location, we have to pay utilities.· McGarvey said, "whereas on campus we wouldn't. " The only funding the center receives is from the money it receives for taking care of children. The possible reduction in child care has put the center in a dire situation. "Fewer children means less funding for us, · McGarvey said. "Expenses don't change: Currently, 90 percent of the children at the center are the children of students at SUU . The other 10 percent are children of SUU faculty and staff. "We want to grow." she said. "We view someone saying we need to move as an opportunity.· SUUSA government positions soon up for grabs BY STACY VENTURA SENIOR STAFF WRITER However, the academic vice president's primary responsibility is to be a mediator for the senate.
