Funds allocated to multiple entities BY LEAH HARTMANN JOURNAL STArF WRITER In a marathon session lasting close to three hours, the SUUSA Senate allocated funds for the following : vans to Salt Lake City, communication workshops, student tutors , and student elections. The senate voted 13-1-1 , to fund half the cost of the vans, which took students to Salt Lake City on Feb. 15. The cost is $2~6 . Bill No. 021-01 , titled "Workshops that Work!" sponsored by Sen. Jessi Allen, Sen. Camille Bell , and Sen . Marilyn Hodson , of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, requested $600, and passed the senate 14-0-1 . The money will go to the cqmmunication honor society, Lambda Pi Eta . The group is sponsoring a series of communication workshops featuring professionals in communication fields. The money will also be used to create an internship book. Bill No. 022-01 , titled · students Helping Students,... sponsored by Sen. Timette Wankier and Sen. Ryan Bell of the College of Science, requested $2,000; it passed the senate 14-0-1 . The fT!Oney will pay student tutors at the ELC for the rest of the year. Allen was on the investigating committee and gave the bill a positive recommendation with an amendment. · She said she wants the bill to include the following: the administration needs to step in for tutor funding in the future , the senate doesn't want student fees going toward funding for tutors, and that a resolution from the senate will be coming to address this problem. Bill No. 023-01 , titled "Paintball for ROTC ," was tabled for another week. The bil l, sponsored by Sen . Lynar Young , Sen. Steve Lisonbee, and Sen . Darren Mower of the College of Business and Technology, requested $850 be allocated to the ROTC for five paintball training packs. Sen. Dana Esplin of the College of Education was on the investigating committee and gave the bill a negative recommendation . The investigating committee heard conflicting stories from the people involved in the ROTC , and they were "very leery" about passing the bill Allen said. The bill was tabled for another week , 14-0-0. Part of bill No. 024-01 , allocating $1 ,810 for student elections, passed the senate 14-0-0. The money allocated will cover the cost of voting booths, which are rented from Iron County, voting ballots, and the printing of the ballots. The bill originally requested $3,000 ; the senators decided to table the rest of the bill for a week so they can clear up questions about funding for food, invitations to the debates, photocopies, and SUTV. Bill No. 026-01 , sponsored by Bell, Allen and Hodsen , requests $600 to send an SUU sociology student to the Pacific Sociological Association's annual conference, March 29April 1. Th~ student, Edan Jorgensen , has developed a profile of juvenile sex offenders; the bill's sponsors call his research "ground breaking ." Bill No. 027-01 , titled "Published Students Wanted for HSS ," requests $800 be allocated to publish an academic jpuf nal for the, College of Humanities and Social Sciences. , The bill was sponsored by Bell , Allen and Hodsen, and "is the most exciting bill of the year," Allen said. , The final bill of the night was No. 02·8-01 , requesting $8 ,173 be allocated to send 45 SUU students to the Mid-Conlinent basketball tournaments in Indiana. All the new bills were circled and posted and investigating committees were assigned.
