Show SALT LAKE CDTOFF Saves Eighty Niles from Lncin to Evanston SALT LAKE NORTHWESTERN A Line to Extend from the Deep Creek Road Into Idaho Tapping the Vootl River Country There was an important railroad meet itg called yesterday afternoon at 5 oclock of the directors and members of the chain bar of commerce President West was in the chair and Secretary Gillespie at his desk There were present also VicePres ident Simon Second VicePresident L E Hall Spencer Clawson J M Ricketts N Treweek J D Spencer H C Lett J W Whitehead jrr C C Upham Major Wilkes W C B Allen William Babcock jr and W H Irvine The meeting was for the purpose of hearing hear-ing Major Wilkes submit n plan together with the interesting data in regard to organizing or-ganizing a new railroad company to be known as the Salt Lake Northwestern railway The proposed line begins at a point on the Salt Lake Deep Creek railway rail-way west of Grantsville opposite the end opposite the end of the Cedar mountains thence in a northwest direction about sixty or seventyfive miles corssinj the Central Cen-tral Pacific at or near Lucene This line will have a maximum grade of not over fifteen feet or practically a level grade After crossing the Central Pacific the line will run up Grouse creek and through the Goose Creek range passing pass-ing down Goose Creek valley to the Snake river which it will cross at a point a few miles above the creatShoshonealls From here the road will pass through Shoshono valley crossing the Oregon Short Line thence un the left hank of the Bin Wood river to the great Wood River mining country It will tap Bellevue and Hailey passes through the great gold belt and into the lumber regions of the south Boise and Salmon river A branch will probably be built into the Salmon river mining country and extended through Camas prairie nearly duo west following the South Boise river to Boise City the capital of Idaho and tapping Pine Grove Rocky Bar and other extensive mining districts To summarize the country through which the line will travel it can be said that with the exception of that portion across the desert from Cedar mountain to Lucia the entire length will be through a country abounding in lumber mineral agricultural and stock resources Major Wilkes in his examination found immense forests of valuable timber 500 miles in extent containing pine fir and spruce some of which measured five feet in diameter A tree was found twentytwo feet in circumference and from ninety to one hundred feet to the limbs Mr C C Upman superintendent of the Rapid Transit Tran-sit and a civil engineer of large experience visited this country and corroborates these statements and according to his estimate there must be ten billion feet of available lumber Major Wilkes in making the preliminary surveys found that they could get over this country on a maximum grade of 1 per cent The distance by the cutoff from Salt Lake city to Lucin will be 126 miles The present route by Ogden and the Central Pacific being 183 saving 57 miles and haying hay-ing the further advantage of a practically level road and obviating the heavy grades of Promontory hill where the Central Pacific Pa-cific use double headers This new route from Lucin to Ogden via Salt Lake city makes a saving by traffic and operating expense ex-pense of at least 25 per cent A saving of about eighty miles in distance is made from Lucin on the Central Pacific to Evanston Wyo on the Union Pacific by the Salt Lake cut off This new route for transcontinental trans-continental traffic via Salt Lake city not only shortens the distance but makes a great saving in operating expenses The route from Evanston includes the Wyoming Wyom-ing Salt Lake California line recently located through Emigration caflon into this city From Salt Lake city it includes traffic arrangements over the Been Greet road and tho Salt Lake Northern At Salt Lake city the new cut off to the west it is understood will secure the through business of the Denver Rio Grande Western the Santa Fe the Missouri Mis-souri Pacific tho Rock Island and the Chicago Chi-cago Burlington Quincy which can be handled much cheaper over the new line than via Ogden It will also secure for the eastern lines mentioned an inlet into Idaho and eventually into the extreme northwest and sound country The new line from Salt Lake city to Hailey Idaho will be about two hundred and fortvoight miles long a saving of eighty miles over the present Union Pacific route to say nothing the lighter grades This brings the great Shoshone falls one of the greatest attractions of the northwest within five hours of Salt Lake making anew a-new tourist route A committee consisting of Messrs Tre week Upham Spencer Lett and Simon was appointed to meet this afternoon with Major WilKes and other gentlemen who are familiar with tho resources of the country coun-try through which the line will pass and prepare report to be submitted to a meeting meet-ing which will bo called by the chairman |
