Cooking equipment leading cause of fire; be cautious in the kitchen by Jim Maryott Hill AFB Fire Department Thanksgiving is a time to enjoy with family and friends, but it's also a time to be extra cautious. In 1995, cooking equipment was the leading cause of fire with 101,200 incidents, causing 320 deaths and 5,060 injuries. And nationwide, there is a civilian fire injury ever 19 minutes. Some tips to make festivities safe: Cook with a clean stove and oven. Keep kitchen clutter and loose clothing away from the stove's heat.
