Show 10 Hilltop Times COMMENTS Nov. 2, 1990, One for the road may be one too many by Ralph C. Jensen AFLC News Service editor E-- Q ow about one tor the roaaY One drink may be one too many, according to the American Automobile Association. Alcohol, particularly ethyl alcohol, is absorbed immediately into the bloodstream through the walls of the stomach and small intestine. And because the brain has a high concentration of blood, the effect of alcohol on the central nervous sys- tem happens within minutes. It reduces control, judgment and coordination and hampers perceptual abilities, speech and speed of reflexes. Since C the beginning of automobile DUD Editor's note: travel, alcohol and driving have proven to be the wrong partners. From an editorial in the Quarterly Journal of Inebriety, dated 1904, a history of 25 fatal car crashes showed that 19 people had been drinking an hour before the collision. The other six drivers were considered moderate drinkers. That year, 375 more people were to die in auto accidents. It is unknown how many had been using "spirits." That's a far cry from today's problems. Now, more than 159 million cars use the nation's roads. More than 50, 000 people will die in auto accidents this year. That's more people than live in Wyoming's largest city. ; ffldl nfl F This is another in a series of mes- sages from the leaders of Hill units deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield. The messages originally were published and circulated to the troops at Desert Shield, sites and are reprinted here. glad to have this opportunity to update on what we have been doing in D'm At one level, we have been doing the same as everybody finding a place to be, getting set up and organized, adjusting to the heat and getting over jet lag.
