evenings NEWS among which were some charged with larceny and kindred offenses in view of the fact that petty thefts are becoming of frequent occurrence people are enquiring of what w hat use it is for the police to make efforts to catch the thieves when the grand jury will turn them loose again without even being placed on trial it will pot not do to say that there was not sufficient evidence to indict for in some of tile the cases it is on oil record that the parties have pleaded guilty when before the justice for preliminary examination for instance a man named sykes was taken up on two charges of obtaining money under false pretenses the proof was clear against him and when before the justice he said 1 I did it all but you cant hang me for it he also remarked that the people whom he got money of were served right and were fools for trusting him in the housebreaking cases also there was ample evidence before the committing magistrate and some of the defendants had beaded pleaded guilty such proceedings by y a jury create a suspicion that there is something unexplained behind it all rome home from europe elder wm J kelson of the eleventh ward was one of the elders who returned with the immigrants sept 20 he left tills this city oct 10 1888 and was assigned to the london conference he labored in the london berkshire wiltshire shirland aad and portsmouth districts and was and insinuating manner has been making his way throughout the country settlements of this county and possibly to some extent in this city also peddling something which he claims to be a certain means of preventing lamps from exploding or their chimneys from breaking if placed within the body of the lamp but which reality is nothing else than small particles of the ordinary grey colored sandstone which is now so extensively ten used in this city for building purposes and which is positively worthless for the purposes for which a gullible public are purchasing it from him at the rate of fifty cents for each piece ece the fellow has confidentially fidentia lly admitted that thai his fraudulent business yields him a net profit of often ten dollars per day and also that he gets his material from the stone yards in this city which statement is verified by one of the policemen of this city seeing him in the act of picking up and anaf carrying away the pieces of rock the same bilk some weeks since procured a quaint quantity ity of damaged dye stuff left at the old deret woolen mills at the time of the removal of the factory and with one arm tied up in a sling to enlist sympathy and a sympathetic story about the limb being broken in a shocking manner hawked the stuff around the country as superior bluing some of the tenderhearted tender hearted ladies who patronized him in that capacity were quite surprised at meeting the fellow a few days subsequently minus his and all of injury to his arm he Js is probably the same fellow also who some months since was engaged in peddling colored lamp wicks said to possess the same virtues now claimed for the small chips of stone but which the credulous purchasers reha sers found to their chagrin to be no better than wicks they could buy at any store for a hundred per cent less than the price they paid him the next person he attempts to impose upon ought to promptly report 0 A r ll 11 him to the proper officers and 9 have a e him
