Show THE TURKISH MISSION the following is froma from a letter from president P F f P hintze dated at constantinople addressed to president george teasdale and which appears in a late issue of the millennial star first of all I 1 feel to thank god our heavenly father for his many blessings and favors in preserving me on my journey by land and by water that I 1 have safely arrived at our home here in constantinople this extensive trip of over miles has been of great use to me I 1 have now a better understanding of the country and its peoples and ana what they may need and how to advise the elders I 1 have found many people anxious to hear and have borne my testimony to thousands and feel encouraged cou raged that a work will yet be done here just how many may join is of course a secret but buta I 1 know that if we warn the people we do our duty and god will draw his own and give us increase with the elders who came last I 1 am well pleased we will now ba able to test our work w ork here after these elders have labored here for few years we shall be able to know if the people desire the gospel air of not personally I 1 feel a great desire dessire that they get a full opportunity ft R this end I 1 labor elders smart and simmons Simi and brother dieterle Dieterie am are appointed to labor at they are there now at I 1 remained about three months the taft gospel was well investigated by 1 many two were baptized and others claimed that they were cona averted but for several reasons they were not baptized to be baptized baptised sed 4 just now requires a good deal of at courage we have no rights and one being baptized is liable to am and banishment dadeh bitely taxes are also I 1 increased besides the usual hatred and eions common to the cause of tra troth everywhere the personality of god was abec th hughly discussed at VA aad though a stumbling block to many yet it did much good and I 1 look for our labors to bear good fruits mutt on perhaps it is well that not many were baptized just yet ye because the government interfered with us perhaps thinking our consuls would not assist us but we received the necessary aid and established confidence then we ve war forbidden to preach without gw gov ern mental permission this makes maim but little difference so far as the elders don dont donit it understand the lui guage and cannot be stopped hm from talking in their own house amt how we shall get the me be cessare permission I 1 do not km knowli but trust to god for guidance and help to petition the government is a tedious job I 1 ought to ea j ploy an attorney we need the permission or we may beor be ordered deredi out and an our local help is muck worse eoff off than we having no de bense whatever of course we haw god but he may require us to work with the government to bri bring out the necessary permission may I 1 j hire an attorney to assist us A good attorney here will of cou coune not dot be so very expensive but hift services will cost something we need to get upon sure footing as aa soon as possible about the ara question asked by the natives ia I 1 have you a government brother reports one IM cism and some applications a i a the natives to be baptized baptize cL toe on future will tell more of that aiex it is certainly a prominent cam elder locander ls is at antioch his case is an unfortunate one he arrived arri ved on foot without a penny I 1 was compelled to assist filmdom him film dam claley as you will see from froin the w port I 1 am afraid he will be obliged to leave should he not immediate help from home here in constantinople the has collapsed I 1 will see what VW be done three have been 01 brother stauffer Sta ufler is here hei he Z have gone with elder clove but as the latter was not able to go he will stay here and study turkish pre to going brother is here and faithful and should nothing be done regarding printing he will be sent into the country it we should do much translating his hia labors would be needed here ue fie has been a faithful help to brother clove personally I 1 intend to use all my influence and power for the advancement van cement of the mission I 1 believe we are sent here to open up the mission by all honorable means if possible eleand and not to close it we have had many reverses and many troubles to overcome but we have yet a chance to lift our voices ina in a good cause I 1 desire to improve the chance peradventure god may give us grace and a few to be saved here also individually I 1 feel well and desire to do my duty I 1 know I 1 am very imperfect and make many mistakes but I 1 know my desire is COW good J and that my heart is engaged ah n full in the up building of christs kingdom one thing I 1 desire particularly to mention nearly all the elders elden came here hare partly discouraged from what they have heard beard concerning this mission when elders thus come bome half discouraged they look upon everything with doubt and I 1 have seen instances where they never got over it but it made them IU ill missionary labor mastbe fully sustained or er let alone brothers and sheren ian have responded to their calls to preach the gospel but in the present situation I 1 will let brother Shere nian remain at home until I 1 can send and him a companion from zion he is a you ug man with a fine testimony to sum glum up with I 1 can only say I 1 1 am hopeful and do not feel to falve up at a all our mission is taking the ri right ht shape by degrees and by god gods Is help we will prosper I 1 look back dpn my kabars with satisfaction is I 1 know they have been honestly and conscientiously performed I 1 if r we should only succeed in saving one soul our labors and moneys spent will be well paid I 1 see ee by the record that there have been 30 baptisms should only 10 even remain faithful what a joy to us all |
