Show DR CONDON AND MORAL IDEAS ON saturday evening we published a letter from dr A 8 condon the poet surgeon and physician phy sican of city dr condon always writes in good style whether in poetry or prose and this communication was couched in forcible yet respectful terms it was designed as a defame of the weber county republicans Republic anN but drifted into a vigorous eulogy of at the republican party the doctor claims that the of a petition for the removal odthe officer who attempted to enforce the laws law against gambling and the social evi are not the representatives weber county republicans yet tat the petition sets forth that it aka W framed by order of the the republican party of weba web county at a regular meeting hem hek for the purpose and it was signed 1 the chairman and the secretary the committee this looks very much like the opposite of the doctor statement again among the one hundred eigners to the petition which the republican committee endorsed we are the names of a number of prominent republicans of ogden aej no one will dispute that ogden is part of weber county so it is IF a fad fact that many weber county republicans public ans did oppose the action of the deputy marshal in his enforcement of the laws and the republic can committee by its chairman subsequently attacked the marshal maceba 1 in an abusive letter because he assumed the responsibility of the whole movement for the su of vice in ogden thus the republican party of weber county cannot shake itself loose loom from the odium which attaches to it in the dispute with the united states marshal and his assistants we do not dispute the fact alleged by dr condon that the respectable portion of the republican party is 18 with the marshal band and it pledges itself to prove t axis at the ballot box whenever called upon that is to say there are a number of respectable republicans bics in weber county who desire the suppression of vice in ogden and are willing that the federal authority shall be exercised purpose officials refuse or neglect to enforce the ordinances we believe that and congratulate those respectable republicans upon the position they occupy and the who openly vindicates their cause how many they number does not appear at present we hope their sentiments will mate in the manner he promises abr for actions speak louder anan worda and true virtue is something more than moral ideas and this brings us to another point in the drs letter which he amplifies to a great extent he we the republican party speak bafs aag of it as a whole has been rewarded regarded for thirty years as I 1 the party gmt moral ideas we suppose that by this he means the party has bem been so regarded Jed by him and aad other J admiring supporters well we have ve no objection to their andul in this opinion but we re nind him that there are millions of vople who take an opposite view of vila proposition and many great who support their antigon dm bm by pertinent arguments and W fc A ussr facts however we will not attempt to decide that question but we suggest that great moral ideas though very good so far as they go are not by any means sufficient for moral government we consider that the great sin of this intellectual tel age is the perception of morality and the lack of its common practice people who proclaim great moral ideas and who fall fail to carry them into moral actions are worse than those choser r who make no boast of their theories of virtue perhaps there is little to brag of in either party on this score and while there are respectable people in both do great praise is due to one more than the other yet if there is to be any excess of blame it should fall upon that party which vaunts daunts itself as the possessor of superior moral ide asand is no better than others in their practical application and enforcement in the present issue we are gratified at the evidence afforded that the respectable republicans of weber county are opposed to the shameless Immor immorality immorally allt which has flaunted itself in the face and eyes of f decent people in ogden since the liberal party there has obtained civic control and we shall be glad to hear from them in the manner indicated by dr condon whenever the matter comes come forward in the shape of a practical public question |
