Show THE PARK CITY Wednesday, July 3, 1974 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR continued kindness flows between you and Warren King by the gallon, nay by the bucket. Obviously, you like him a little, because you accepted a complimentary seasons pass from him, on behalf of your daughter who lives in Salt Lake, so I suppose you wouldnt want to embarrass him by promoting the construction in his Fropt yard of exactly what you tell him he cant do anyplace else? I really have just a little trouble accepting these thundering statements of high principle, and boundless compassion, when I have heard you in high dudgeoh belaboring the GPCC and King Warren (As you have called him in print). Also, pardon me if my acceptance of your concern for Park Citys water problems is tempered somewhat by the memory of you, at one of the Council meetings, asking for a water study, an extensive one; when the Council had paid $5000 of the Resorts money for one and it had been around for six months or so. Clem read it, Rich read it, I read it, I think Bob did, and I was not alone in my surprise at your request. By the way, have YOU read it yet? Or the drainage study? Or anything else they have supplied the City when it was requested? Somehow Mary, I get the impression that you have made a career of destroying GPCC and Warren King in particular, and it is my belief that you would let this town collapse before you would stop. That opinion is rather ' widespread up here, even the Mayor seems to feel that way at times. Giving you the benefit of doubt though; if all your concern for P.C. is valid, why havent yqp jumped on Niles Andrus too? The mine stands to be the biggest business, and largest single polluter in the area, and yet not too. much is said about it. Niles Andrus is a hell of a gentleman, and I have a great respect for him, but somehow I have this impression that he could walk into a Council meeting and say something like Hey guys, Id like to roll boulders down Main Street on alternate Thursdays. How would a couple of you like to be pins? Ridiculous? I keep thinking the answer would be and Roger Sir, not a peep from Mary. Perhaps your criticism of the use of Resort land would be more believable if you sauntered up to the Keam Building in Salt Lake someday, kicked in the door, ran upstairs and gave good ol Clark Wilsons cage a shake or two-- He actually signs the land deals, doesnt he? Im sure both of these fine men have been witnessing your bestowal of affection upon Warren King, and have astutely three-bags-fu- ll, considered what your wrath would be like, and have chosen to worship thee from afar. I gota blast of that wrath the time I brought up the question of why someone who was an attorney, whose family owned so much prime ski land would be so concerned with GPCC. Denials of any concern or ambition, or connection with the Condas Or Lehmer I guess) properties came yowling out of thePark Record, the Salt Lake Tribune, and that paragon of representative journalism, the Deseret News. I guess if I believed the story that Pages from page 3 you pay the taxes on the Mine Co. property your house sits on, at the same time the Resort pays them, in order to affect an adverse possession of this land, Id have to believe you, and say that you were more concerned with Mine Co. land than your own. Rays actions when he politely asked Summit Engineerings surveyors (Absolutely no connection with GPCC) to stay off his land in Deer Valley, and then wouldnt tell them where his unposted, unfenced land was, would seem to bear this out. However, Mary, Im still confused. I keep hearing all these stories about how you, or somebody representing you, called Hosking Helicopters and ordered them not to drop skiers on mountain peaks where they, in the dead of winter, might ski over your property, even though Hosking had no idea where your land was? And how about that old access road hassle with Alan Thompson? Ill bet he doesnt believe youre unconcerned about your property? Hoo boy! Maybe its not you, Mary, maybe its Ray! After all, he did show remarkable concern for property rights with his ad in the Park Record stating that all dogs caught on Lehmer (or Condas, I cant remember) property would be shpt? (Whered you get that particular wording Ray? Out of an old WW II SS Public Notice? ) I still cant decide on where your loyalties lie, but I have a modest proposal. Ill pay to ad, as reprint the a courtesy to Ray (Make the world safe for sheep) Lehmer, if you will publish a map showing all the Condas-Lehme- r properties all us dogs are supposed to stay off of. That would also help your friends show just how large, and shoot-the-do- gs inconsequential your holdings really are. Please Mary, for the good of the town, tell us of all these things, and clean the air ! By the way, its sad that you missed the point of that petition. People just want to know whether or not you live here, or in Salt Lake, and why. If your friends that signed it did so without reading it, perhaps that is indicative of somewhat less support than you think! Lack of concern, at least, wouldn't you say? I Uiought that after sweeping into office with Claire Boyle (the LDS candidate) on a landslide of 221 votes, in spite of Clem Hansen splitting the Republican ticket by running cuunmi Independent, your disdain of the 319 signatures on that petition has caused me to realize that your values have beyond my comprehension, particularly since you beat John Sharp by 5 votes. You didnt win by a landslide, you have never come off well in a large public meeting to my knowledge, and the best copy you get, you write yourself for the most part. The unsigned articles sure sound like your style to me, with the exception of Eleanor Bennetts letters, of course. Truly, you have matured as a grown Republican politician. You will go far, indeed. How can you NOT expect people up here to question your residency? Kids in school in SLC, job in SLC, mail, no (me ever sees you up here, and where did you get your license plates, by the way? Dont you think that when the joys of living without water up here in the winter are being supby your could least the that you porters, experienced do would be up here to answer their complaints? Perhaps they believe, as I do, that you are so far removed from Park City, that all our problems are unreal to you. How about explaining some of the peculiarities of your performance when you are here? Youve missed 17 meetings by my count, and thats not counting the arent going to put up with your peccadilloes, and P.C. is not the first or last place of opportunity to live - and they will leave. Maybe the Resort will go broke too! And Park West! Cant I you see the dream? The largest ski area in Utah, in the world, on Condas land - What a vision! And a quaint little historic ghost town let's hear with staged shoot-outattraction it for the extra-adde- d of Park City and dream of what it might have been. s; Bob Hays 72 you one in February mysteriously disappeared from. Of course, theres no law that says you have to come to the meetings, I guess, but some think it would be nice. It would have also been nice if I had not noticed on occasion, that your agendas were apparently unread. Its pretty tough to open one of those folders and read it without creasing the top of the paper a little, you know. Also, I guess that as far as the Executive Meetings are concerned, your failure to disenfranchise the other Councilmen if they didnt attend the Executive Session (voted down on November 2 72) sort of soured you on any premeeting attendance. Ive also been wondering about your hearing since March 8 72, when Warren presented (in executive session) the rather poorly-worde- d proposal his atdrawn had up for restrictorneys ting and controlling the development of this area, and outlining uses and priorities to be set up by GPCC with the City. At NO TIME EVER has Warren King or any other agent of GPCC expressed a desire, or shown me any wording that they wished to turn the Resort ski facilities into a private club. Those words were yours, at that meeting, and thereafter in print. You, Mary, were the first person to call GPCC a private club, and I believe you did your level best to promote that fear in others both in SLC and P.C. NO one I have ever met in GPCC has wanted, or needed that situation. Whered YOU hear that private club stuff, anyway? And lately, when did John Price apologize to you, and what in Gods name for? He described your efforts exactly as I remember them; and he was 100 percent right, and justified, in resigning. And when did you say you talked to Jan Peterson last? Please Mary, keep talking to us, and tell us where you live, and how you got your house up here, what all the significance of your familys land is, and why you fight Warren and GPCC at the Citys expense?
