Show iHfmiiiiiimiinpiiii TV Highlights DESERET Williams And Cigaiirette Ads x" fV .? 3 y Riifitiiiiiinimiiitiimiiriiiiiiiimiimtiiiniiiiimimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiin Deseret News Television Editor Andy Williams finds himself in a box as far as his upcoming television series is concerned. He is opposed to cigarette commercials during early evening hours. His series is being sponsored by a cigarette company. It came about without his knowing that NBC had sold his series to a tobacco advertiser and before he found out what time he would be on. Now he and the. net- -' work have agreed that an announcement will be carried at the conclu- sion of each weeks shw as long as the program has cigarette sponsors. Andy issued this statement today: I find it difficult to support cigarette advertising on television during the early evening hours, and my new series will be broadcast at 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays on the network. I took my position anti-smoki- . against cigarette advertising without knowing that NBC already had sold ume on the show to a tobacco advertiser. This has put NBC in an embarrassing position. "Although my feelings about cigarette advertising have not changed, I am pleased that NBC, recognizing how seriously I feel about this, has announcement at the concluagreed to carry an sion of each weeks show as long as the show has cigarette advertisers. Under the circumstances, I feel obliged to live up to my contractual commitment to NBC. Support For KUED Again and again, the national stature of KUED (Ch. 7) is being demonstrated by awards and grants. Latest recognition to the Utah educational station is a $70,000 grant from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, announced by the office of Sen. Wallace F. Bennett The grant was one of three made to stations throughout the EJ5. With HEW funds for educational television at a "diminishing point, Dr. Bex Campbell, executive director and general manager of KUED, considers the action unique. Twenty-si- x other stations will receive money later on if funds are available. The $70,000, coupled with $20,000 and $10,000 funds set aside by the Utah Joint Council on Educational Television, will enable KUED lo buy a virtually new transmitter. It has been telecasting its distinctive and valuable educational programs through the use of a transmitter which is outdated and sometimes out of service. V Five Utah musicians, sports var- championships, iety programs and movies highlight TV viewing tonight and early Saturday. nh 7 BIACKAVHITECX : COLOR Servlet wltkle fin Hear Senicb Car ladle-ttare- 0.
