Show o VOLUME XVI - Number 9 Dixie College, St. George, Utah 84770 Friday, February 25, 1983 Forensics Captures Fifth First Former Rebel Elected President Mark Wade, Dixie Graduate and son of College President and Mrs. Alton Wade, and former Rebel Inter Club Council Chairman, was elected student body president of Southern Utah State College, Wednesday February 23. President Wade, the day following the election said Diana and I are delighted that Mark had the desire to run for the position and serve the students at Southern Utah State. We, are of course, very excited that he was successful in the election, as we know he will be a very effective leader. He continued, I am personally proud that he is a graduate of Dixie College and that some of the spirit and training he received here will also be transferred to SUSC. Following the SUSC elections, college president Gerald R. Sherritt commented Mark has been an exceptional and very aggressive student this year. I'm confident that he will make a very fine student The Rebel Forensics squad is pictured above holding the array of trophies they won at the Ricks College Invitational last weekend The Dixie College Forensic Squad extended its first place winning streak to five consecutive touraments, this time sweeping the Ricks College Upper Valley Invitational Forensic Meet held last weekend in Rexburg, Idaho. The win, a lopsided one for Dixie who finished with 10 points to second place College of Eastern Utah with 44 points and Boise State in third place with 22 points, leaves Dixie with only one contest remaining to complete an entire sweep. That contest is the traditional instate rivalry between CEU, Snow and Dixie. It will be held at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah next week. 1 pre-seas- Attending the Ricks College tournament were most of the Phi Rho Pi schools from Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, along with some four-yeinstitutions from Idaho. The win was especially bright, commented Michael Woodward, forensic director at Dixie, in that so many of our students qualified for final round competition. Each of the twelve contestants we entered qualified as a finalist in at least one event and all but two saw trophies from their efforts. Altogether Dixie brought home e fourteen trophies, including the sweepstakes award, five events, four second-plac- e ar first-plac- first-pla- ce honors, and four third-plac- e recognitions. Kristin Catherall set the pace for Dixie, winning first place in persuasive speaking, communication analysis, oral interpretation, and combining with the six member readers theatre team to capture first place in its event. She also finished third place in duet acting, teaming with Richelle Holt in that event. Not far behind Kristin, Robert Wahlquist also set some enviable records at the Ricks College meet. In e addition to participating in the readers theatre win, he captured first place in informative speaking, and second place in on page 5 first-plac- DECA Members Qualify for Nationals of the Dixie Three members DECA marketing club recently qualified for Nationals, to be held in April. The DECA club attended the State Career Development Conference at Utah State University in Logan on February 16,17,18. They really had a lot of fun and a few awards were won. Brian Bartholomew won second place in Food Marketing and qualified for nationals. Coleen Johnson won fourth place in Apparel and Accessories and also fourth place in Management Decision She qualified for nationals in Apparel and Accessories. Darrell Wamhoff won second place in Management Decision and qualified for nationals. Also Carolyn Lindsay won fourth place in Fashion Merchandising and Delsy Kramer won fourth place in Sales Representative. Those who attended the con Making-Merchandisin- g. The Nationals will be held in Houston, Texas from April 26th through the 30th. Lin-sa- y, body president. He is a fine young man. The president continued, Were excited about the possibilities this creates to bring about better relations between our two schools, and draw them closer together. Rudy Iverson, Dixie College Dean of Students, who functions as advisor to the student government, upon hearing of Marks election, said, Why thats the greatest thing that ever happened to SUSC. We are very happy and proud of Mark and wish him well. Marks mother, Diana Wade, just a few hours after the election announcement said, Were very excited for him and really pleased.lt will be a great experience for him. He will obviously take a lot of our special Dixie Spirit with him and that will be especially good for SUSC, and super for the college to have one of our graduates become student body president in Cedar City. |
