Show TWO COMING IMPROVEMENTS. It is sometimes said that new needs are not developing rapidly enough to keep industry going, and that from this cause we are certain to have permanent unemployment. But the capacity of the American people for consumption is almost unlimited, so long as the endless chain between production and consumption con-sumption is moving, so that production produc-tion makes consumption possible, and consumption keeps production active. For instance, there are in two fields great possibilities of demand for new production: the cooling of buildings and the elimination of smoke. In these two fields great contributions can be made to human health and comfort. It is probable that within the next 25 years the cooling of houses will become as general as the heating of houses is today. Equipment no more expensive than furnace equipment will be developed whereby buildings of all sorts may be kept at an even temperature all year round. Some progress has been made in this field, but there is great further opportunity for development. Probably within 25 years the pour- ing of smoke over communities will j be considered intolerable. Much has been accomplished in reducing this j evil, which has been a necessary evil;! in these days smoke pouring out of an industrial chimney looks good. I But methods of smolce elimination with actual economy in the consumption consump-tion of fuel are being developed. Boilers Boil-ers which produce little smoke are being built. A Baltimore inventor has developed a completely smokeless furnace fur-nace which injects hydrogen into an enclosed compartment which prevents the inflow of air and consequent imperfect im-perfect consumption of fuel oil. Clouds of smoke pouring over industrial in-dustrial towns disfigure homes and furnishings and make the development develop-ment of attractive surroundings difficult. dif-ficult. They clog up the human system sys-tem and are enemies to good health. This is no time to be making conditions condi-tions difficult for industries. But inventive in-ventive genius is making it profitable to eliminate.. smoke, which is only a waste of fuel. Fixed temperatures in houses, offices, of-fices, stores and factories would add to human efficiency as well as human hu-man comfort and physical well being. Installations of these two improvements improve-ments in living conditions would keep busy two great national industries for years. When normal times return there will be plenty of demand for the output of industry though rapid shifts in public demand will not prevent pre-vent some irregularity in employment and some periods of slack demand for labor. |
