Show smith comments on outlook for hog producers A reduction in hog slaughter improving cons consumer umer demand for hog p products r and large stocks of pork and lard in cold storage were named by professor harry smith 0 of f the animal husbandry department at the utah state agricultural college among highlights in the outlook for hog producers professor smith quoting from the spring outlook report just released by y the bureau of agricultural economics said that the prospect Is for higher hog prices this hum summer following a spring period of little change the short supply of corn in the western corn belt was reported an important factor in the situation the supply of corn per hog on farms in this area was reported to be 40 per cent less on january I 1 this year than on the same date in 1935 any considerable increase in hog production in this region it was stated Is dependent upon the return of corn production to something like a normal level but even though an average or better than average corn crop is produced this year professor smith pointed out from the report that it is unlikely that hog production will approach levels comparable with the five year 1929 33 average the number of hogs in the western corn belt on january 1 this year estimated at head was tile smallest in many years the total in all the north central states was or about head more than on janu januj j ary 1 1935 it was stated that inspected hog slaughter during the remainder of 1936 37 marketing year probably will be smaller than in the corresponding period of 1935 36 but that the extent of the reduction will of course depend largely upon C orn corn crop prospects this summer |
