Show Largest Bird Sanctuary The largest bird sanctuary in America is at the point where the Bear River flows in the Great Salt Lake 15 miles west of Brigham City on U. S. Highway 91 and 30. Here manmade marshes and lakes cover an area of 250,000 acres. Over 64,216 acres of the tract have been improved at a cost of a million mil-lion dollars. This acreage set aside for water birds as a homing place enroute north or south is inhabited by more than 80 species of birds who live on and in the water and by nearly as many other kinds of birds. Visitors may reach the refuge ref-uge headquarters, which is open to the public, daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A portion of the refuge is set aside each year as a public shooting ground and on this area some of the finest duck and geese shooting in the United States is to be found in season. The Promontory Promon-tory Mountains are on the west, and the Wasatch Range on the east rising abruptly from the valley val-ley floor of 4,200 feet to 9,700 feet above sea level. It is interesting to know that hospitalization for ailing ail-ing and injured birds is also provided, pro-vided, and hundreds are restored to health every year. |
