Show oo ONE MORE LESSON FROM GETTYSBURG After Gettysburg, the south gradually grad-ually weakened until Lee's surrender at Appomattox So Gettysburg was really the beginning of the end of the terrible Civil war In November, following the battle north of the Po tomac, Abraham Lincoln was called on to help dedicate the national cemetery cem-etery at Gettysburg and the address se made on that occasion is acknowledged acknowl-edged to be one of ihe masterpieces of the English languace Lincoln i-ssid i-ssid to have written his speech on a note book while en route on a train to the dedication. Here Is the memorable mem-orable oration: "W cannot dedicate we cannot consecrate we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here have consecrated conse-crated it far above our poor power to ' add or detract. The world will in tie note nor long remember what we Bay here, but t can never forget what ' they did here. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who have fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather f..r us to be here dedicated to the great task re-maining re-maining before us thai from from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion devo-tion that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain that this nation, under God. ' and that government of the people, bv the people, for the people shall not perish from the e3rth." Llncolns words should be a constant con-stant warning to the American people peo-ple that, unless they do dedicate themselves to the higher purposes of government, th great sacrifices which have been made to preserve this 1 countr" a united whole, may fail of accomplishing any great or lasting good. oo |
