Since that prediction came true, instead of having good skiing on a base of snow, you can now inches of enjoy the snow at many of the resorts. The skiing was great last week, but this week it is even 50-inc- 100-pl- h us ble dropper rig. A f for Kemingway Outdoor Columnist One age old wintertime activity is sledding. For gen erations, kids have hoped and prayed for new snow so they could head to the closest slope for some real winter fun. Out in the shed, I still have my Flexible Flyer sled that bought years ago, with money from my paper route. It's runners are a little rusty, but it will still negotiate the slopes. Sleds today are made of thin plastic, and you can feel every bump in the run as you race down the hill. Because of their design, it takes a considerable amount of body language and hand dragging to steer them. They slide easily, but they don't hold up to the rigors of sled ding. We go through one or two plastic sleds a season, and I doubt that any of my kids will have their sleds survive long enough to hang in a shed. Another sliding innovation of mv day was the inner tube. Today, kids have snow tubes, but they are made of vinyl and are covered with the faces of cirtoon characters. They are much more attractive than the black rubber things we used, but I don't think they slide Aj'lK ' J!!-- 1 " lTsST' Even though technology has changed the equipment. finding a place to sled is still easy, the requirements of a good cover of snow and a haven't decent slope changed. There are a number of parks that have built sledding hills as part of their land scape. Sugarhouse Park in Salt Lake City has a great sledding hill. The park near the Kavsville Ponds has a short hill, and West Bountiful has a hill in their city park. e But parks aren't as much fun as taking on the mountains. have found great sledding runs all along the foothills of 1 ., - " ,. .. . .
