But a careful selection at the fast-foo- d counter can increase the nutritional value of these meals. Solid choices can begin with the basics, such as a grilled chicken sandwich. But like Franklin, I'm a believer in my own ability to reform my ways and reshape my behavior. Until recently that belief was grounded more in faith than evidence, but to my surprise I've learned that change can come if you have the right attitude: Go slow and you'll go far. For several months I've been doing very moderate exercise nothing more dramatic than walking. I'm eating better. I have more energy. I've lost 10 pounds. Twice a week I would go to Florida State University for short and sometimes scary lectures on clogged arteries and busted backs, fallen arches and fat content. Then reformers my classmates and I would take a few swipes all around the university's track. Kyle Biggerstaff, a doctoral student in exercise physiology who guided this flock, wisely advised us to take the long view. What matters most, he said, are small improvements over time. You don't have to climb Everest or go diet. A little exercise, on an all-ridone on a regular basis, makes a big difference. So does skipping the fattiest of foods (and learning how to tell the difference). We started off slowly, just walking a few laps and shooting the breeze. Then we added a few turns and picked up the pace. After a few weeks of chugging I looked down and, well, what do you know, return of the waistline! There have been setbacks. Christmas fudge did its damage, and I had to line up exercise buddies to keep me on the straight and narrow. So maybe by this time next year I'll have fallen from grace and into the cheeseburger-and-frie- s fate that awaits newspaper editors. But I think not. I've come to enjoy getting the blood flowing, and I've learned that you don't have to kill yourself to live a more healthful life.
