The once powerful muscles in his arms and shoulders were gone, replaced by white skin stretched tight over sinew and bone. He could feel gaping crevices between his ribs.! His body was shrivelling up, wasting away, except for his hair. It seemed to thrive in the jail cell, growing longer and longer. His beard was now reached below his bottom rib when he tried to sit up straight. The matted, filthy wad on his head extended to the middle of his back. Hair growth didnt seem to be inhibited by the lack or nourishment, or by the cold the constant bone chilling cold. Port longed for blazing sunshine, a cozy fire, a hot bath, and a warm woman. He started to cry one afternoon when he realized he couldn't remember what a steak tasted like. He wondered why there was no trial. He had been arrested for shooting a man. One day the door flew open, the sudden burst of light forced Port to close his eyes. "The nigger girl brought you a present," the guard said, tossing a brown bundle towards Port, then quickly slamming the door before any more of the wretched smell escaped. Carefully, Port unwrapped the bundle. It was fur, some kind of skin. Perhaps cougar. It was a coat, a cougar skin coat worn and ragged, but still a coat, and a warm one at that. The shackles prevented him from putting it on, so he stretched it over his shoulders. The warmth of the coat was wonderful. Then he noticed a lump in the right pocket He felt inside a big red apple.
