Show Free Press - Thursday, September 7, 1989 - Page 3 Volunteer advocates needed at Training School Individuals are needed to serve as volunteer citizen advocates in behalf of mentally handicapped residents at the Utah State Training School, according to Jim Jex, program coordinator. The program is sponsored by the Mental Retardation Association of Utah and the training school, Jex said, and gives community residents the opportunity to become involved in brightening the life of training school residents through monthly visits. Jex said each volunteer is to a resident and is asked to visit a minimum of once each month, making sure that the resident is happy, taken care of, and no rights are being violated. The volunteer is also asked to speak in behalf of the resident at quarterly staff meetings on issues regarding the quality of life and unteers who work during the day. Jex said volunteers attend two training sessions beginning in September to acquaint them with the program. Individuals wishing to assist in the program may contact the United Way Volunteer Center in Provo, Jex full-tim- four-ho- programming. The personal visits can take place whenever it is best for the resident ed e and the volunteer. The staff meetings are held in the evenings to accommodate vol- - rI V said.
