You've heard of mothered or mothering, but have you ever heard of wlfed or wifing? The dictionary defines mothered and mothering as verbs meaning t care for or protect like a mother. You don't find anythong like ,Qnk under wife. A wife is merely a married woman. The closest 18 wifely or "wifelike, both of them adjectives. Think of It. You hear of men being mothered to death, but have J09 'sver heard of one that was wlfed to death? (Unless, of course, fcla wife took a rolling pin to him, in which case it's assault and batteryO Is mothering so much a part of a woman that there Is no such thing as wifing? We start out as little girls playing dolls and soon our skills are practiced on (or so they think) husbands. Then it's Have you taken your medication? Eat your peas, dear. and t)on't forget ot take your umbrella. Men exchange one mother for another. Man is not a domesticated animal anyway. If it were not for a few creature comforts he has become accustomed to such as eating regular meals and wearing clean clothes, a woman would have a hard time keeping him domiciled very long. If the truth were told, what man doesnt want a little mothering every now and then? A little tender loving care when he is sick or tired never hurt any of them. Just dont get so caught up in mothering that you start cutting his meat for him or wiping the mustard Off his face. Beware, too of filing him In with the rest of the kids. All right, you guys. Fall in for a hand washing check. That means you too, fella. The big oneoverthere with the briefcase in his hand. If we spent a little more time taking care of our wifely duties (see? It's an adjective), then perhaps wed make happier mothers. After all, who was It that made us mothers in the first place? 26-- unveil plans to reduce property taxes by phasing out the state school fund levy over the next four years. LOWER PROPERTYTAXES: Wayne Owens, Demowith Gov. cratic gubernatorial candidate poses Matheson and former Gov. Rampton as they Expert tells hoinj to live well roffii less exsigy Rising costs and consumer awareness have helped to reduce the use of energy in States over the past 10 years, but more needs to be done to preserve our remaining energy resources, says Dr. Wayne Ringer, Extension energy specialist at Utah State University. Ringer makes his observation on the eve of American Energy 7. Awareness Week, October He noted that the average American consumer has cut energy use by 14 percent since 1979, from 351 million Btu's to 301 million. That decrease has resulted in from the spiraling large part energy costs during the 1970s. For example, Ringer said, nationwide the price of gasoline more than tripled from the 35.7 cents a gallon we were paying in 1970 to the $1,225 we paid last year. And the cost of natural gas skyrocketed from $1.09 to $5.99 during the same period. With prices racing ahead at such consumers breakneck speed, looked toward conservation to save m oney. Conservation was one of the primary factors in reducing our dependency on imports, and extends the time we have to figure out other energy sources, Ringer 21-2- said. But the USU energy specialist said we still must take measures to conserve energy. One important area is in the home, where conservation measures can put more dollars in the homeowner's pockets. Ringer offered several tips on making your home more energy efficient: ATTIC INSULATION: Check to see If your attic has the recommended levels of insulation for your area. If not, Invest InYnore Insulation. HEATIN- G- COOLING SYSTEM: Clean or replace filters as needed. Close doors and vents in unused rooms. Insulate ducts and SUNLIGHT: Let the sunlight in during the winter and keep it out pipes in unheated spaces. When replacing ask your contractor to show you EnergyGuide fact sheets on operating costs and select the efficient one with lower operating during the summer. Ringer, who teaches classes on energy subjects, says he often costs. Con WALLS: adding insulation when re- EXTERIOR sider your house. modeling or Ask contractors about the payback. . WATER HEATERS: Lower the thermostat on this big energy user. Install insulation wrap and flow restrictor shower heads and faucets. When replacing your water heater, look for the EnergyGuide label and select the efficient one with the lower operating cost. WINDOWS AND DOORS Consider installing storm windows, doors or double -- pane glass to keep in the heat. Compare costs for payback. APPLIANCES: Fully load clothes and dish washers. Keep refrigerator doors closed. When replacing look for the EnergyGuide label and select the one with the lower operating cost. ng FLOORS AND FOUNDATION WALLS; Check for adequate insulation under floors and around basement, crawl spaces and foundation walls. THERMOSTAT: Consider a clock thermostat with automatic It will save you night setback. money. Keep temperatures 65 degrees in the winter and 5 degrees lower when sleeping or away. Higher temperatures are recommended for homes with sick, elderly or Infants. WEATHER STRIPPING CAULKING: Locate air cracks around doors, windows and other openings where outside air is Infiltrating your house. Seal them with caulking or weatherstripping for aulck payback. hears his students complain that doesnt do any good to install it ener- devices because utilthe price to compensate for the lost income. Ringer tells them to consider how much it would be costingthem now If they hadnt installed the energy -- conserving feature. Ringer said experts may disagree concerning how long the energy resources on the earth will last, but these facts have become gy-saving ities will raise clear: Proven sources of energy are limited. People consume the energy of the Earth faster than nature can create it. U.S. lifestyles account for an astonishing amount of the energy consumer on our Earth. If we do not recognize a real energy crisis today, we are at least well on our way toward exenergy hausting our well-kno- resources. The continuous increase in energy costs has become a major crisis for many families. If we cannot live without energy, Ringer asks, how can we live well with less? Conservation of the energy resources In all forms is essential to our well -- being, Ringer said, adding that we can slow down our rate of energy consumption by changing the way we use it - - and waste it. Some changes require new attitudes, values and habits, he said. "Others will take time, effort and money. Tesch rejects utility contributions Democratic Attorney General candidate, Joseph Tesch today announced that he returned several contributions from substantial public utilities. "Unlike my opponent Attorney General Wilkinson who has accepted several thousand dollars of contributions from utilities and utility attorneys, I have chosen to return such contributions, "Tesch said. In letters to utility companies who donated to Tesch, Tesch re- turned the contributions stating, In order to maintain that arms length relationship and to remove from the minds of the public any implication that In any future adversary proceeding I might be unduly disposed to favor utilitled positions, I feel I must decline your donation and I am, therefore, returning that check uncashed. In recent filings and during debates, Wilkinson has disclosed contributions from Utah Power and Light, Mountain Bell, Mountain Fuel Supply and several utility attorneys. It Is the duty of the Attorney General of this state to represent the people In the utility and Public Service Commission Arena. It will be difficult for Attorney General Wilkinson to do so after taking such large contributions from public utilities,' Tesch said.
