Englands Christmas Is Jovial Holiday Italys Befana Brings Gifts One of the most interestof our Christmas legends comes to us from ancient Italy. The Three Wise Men, searching for the Christ Child, stopped to ask directions of an old woman, Befana. They invited her to go with them to worship the new born King, but Befana would not leave until she had swept her house and baked her bread. Impatient, the Wise Men left without her. When her housework was completed, Befana packed a basket of toys and set out to find the Wise Men. Legend says she never found them, nor the stable where Christ was born and, to this time, each Christmas she searches with her basket of toys, leaving gifts for children along the way. ing y i Christmas in Fngland is very much like Christmas in America. Joviality and gen- erosity are everywhere; presents are exchanged; carols are sung on the highways, byways and in the churches. The day after Christmas is known as Boxing Day and is observed on a scale almost equal to that of Christmas. Originally, Boxing Day was the day on which the village priest opened the poor box in the parish house and distributed the money. Nowadays, mail carriers, newsboys and other public servants often receive gifts as they make their rounds from house to house. THE STAR Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the King, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east and are come to worship him. Matthew 2:1-- 2 Evergreens Part Of Ancient Rituals Evergreens were used in traditional ceremonies long before the birth of Christ. Egyptians, celebrating the winter solstice, shortest day of the year, brought green date palms into their homes as a symbol of life triumphant over death." The evergreen bough was used by the Romans in their observance of the feast of Saturn. The Druids believed that a sprig of evergreen in the house meant eternal life. Early Scandinavians paid homage to the fir tree and, for Norsemen, evergreens symbolized the revival of their sun god. Balder. Henry VIII Staged Great Holiday Feast Knowledge of Customs Helped Washington Washingtons George of Christmas knowledge celebrations helped the strtggle for colonial free- dom. In 1776 many, if not all, Puritan settlers in the new world disapproved of Christ- mas festivities. The same was not true for the mercenary Hessians fighting for King George against the colonists. They observed Christmas wherever they went. Christmas customs throughout the world were not generally known in 1776, but George Washington the Hessians would be celebrating. Thus, it was on knew December 1776, that American troops crossed the Delaware, attacked and put to rout the surprised Hessians who were obviously sleeping off the effects of their holiday cheer. 25-2- The greatest Christmas feast of all time may have been sponsored by King Henry VIII in Westminister Hall in 1248. He had tents erected and artificial gardens plotted within the spacious walls of his palace. Knights came out of the tents to joust in tournaments and fantastically dressed dancers emerged from the gardens to entertain guests. Cost of the gold cloth used in the celebration amounted to 600 pounds alone. Culinary preparations for the feast can be only estimated, considering that Richard II normally employed 2,000 cooks to prepare food for the 10,000 persons who shared his festive board.
