The day is still known as Christs Birthday in many countries of Europe, called Noel by the French, Natale by the Italians, Weihnacht by the Germans, and Yulen Jul in Scandinavia. Most scholars agree that Christ was not bom on De Hanukkah commemorates the military and spiritual victory of Judas Maccabaeus and his army over the King of Syria, who attempted to crush the Jewish faith in one God. Hanukkah, derived from the Hebrew word meaning dedication, is also called the Feast of Dedication and The Festival of Lights. It always starts on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev. Because the Jewish calendar is based on the moon rather than the sun, the Jewish holidays fall each year on varying dates of the solar three hundred sixty five day calendar. He was not born in what we now measure as I A.D. The custom of celebrating Christs birthday on December 25th originated in Rome in the fourth century of the Christian era, some say in 354 A.D. Some experts say that the Roman monk, Dionysius Exiguus, who made the calculations for the calendar in the sixth century, could have misplaced A.D. by at least six years. Herod the Great died in 4 B.C., according to the current Gregorian calendar. When a hoop is completed, lay an evergreen branch face up on the left side of the hoop and wire the stem tightly to it. Then place the next branch so it overlaps the first, like shingles on a roof, and fasten again. Continue adding branches in a counter-clockwis- e ection until wreath is ished. Decorate dirfin- your wreath with cones, berries, nuts, seed pods, dried weeds, bows, bells or other ornaments. It is better not to use spray paint, glitter or artificial snow your wreath will retain its natural look. Wreaths, of course, can be hung on doors, in windows or used as table decorations. Wrapping Round Gift Need Not Frustrate Theres no reason to lose your "cool trying to wrap a round package for Christmas giving. Place the package on paper and cut so there is an inch overlap on each side. Fix neatly with tape. Leave enough paper at both ends to fold over and meet in the center of the cylinder. Pleat these ends neatly toward the center, making firm creases. Cut two circles of paper to fit the ends and paste over the pleats. Round packages may also be wrapped in several layers of tissue paper with overlap fixed with tape, and two or three inches of paper at each end. Tie the end wraps firmly with ribbon or ends yarn. Cut rosette-lik- e that result in thin strips to resemble a party snapper. Decorate each end with a bow. Nutcracker Ballet From Ancient Story Christmas Seal Idea Began In Denmark Generations before the Christmas seals, the seasonal reminder of the fight to stamp out tuberculosis, have been around since Russian composer Tchaikovsky wrote the music for the Nutcracker Ballet, boys and girls were captivated by the legend of the wonderful nutcracker. The first story was written by the German author, Hoffman, who called it The Nutcracker and the King of Mice. The story found its way to other countries where it was given various plots and twists. In the Russian version, the tale begins with a gala Christmas Eve party. Uncle Dross, the childrens favorite, arrives and presents Clara, the heroine of the story, with an amaing nutcracker in the form of a soldier, and the brother Frank with toy soldiers and a fort. 1904. The idea was that of a Danish postal clerk, Einar Holboell. Sorting Christmas mail in 1903, Holboell mentioned the idea to his fellow workers as a way to help defray the costs of fighting tuberculosis. The idea reached King Christian, who approved, and the image of Queen Louise appeared on the first seals in 1904. A Danish-borAmerican, Jacob Riis, sold the idea to the American public in a 1907 magazine article and a Red Cross worker, Miss Emily Bissell, started the first American sales that year. n t M IT CAKES Fruit cakes can be kept almost indefinitely if they're properly wrapped and stored.
