Whatever the name, Santa and gift giving are part of the Christmas tradition around the world. The First Santa Was Saint Nicholas The first Santa Claus probably never saw snow and never traveled more than a few miles from the place of his birth. Saint Nicholas was born Heres Prayer For Christmas in St. Francis of Assissi is perhaps best remembered for his influence on the caroling tradition. Saint Nicholas became the Bishop of Myra (present-da- y Demre) and, legend says, performed a series of miracles which brought him great fame. He was imprisoned by Roman Emperor Diocletian and released by Constantine, first emperor to embrace Christianity. He died in 342 A.D. and it was centuries before his fame spread to the modern world. Ephesus, a ghost city, lies some 35 miles from Izmir, near the Agean Sea. Ephesus is frequented by archaeologists, chiefly interested in the Temple of Diana, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. In recent years, Christians have come to Ephesus in increasing numbers, drawn by the legend that Mary spent her last years here, cared for by St. John the Apostle. Amid the ruins of the 6th century Church of St. John, a tiny chapel is believed by many to stand over the site of Marys home. Local tradition says that both Mary and John died in Ephesus, but their tombs have never been discovered. Ephesus was destroyed by Goths in A.D. 262 but the Christianized city revived and became the seat of two of the most important councils in Roman Catholic history. Later invasions by Arabs, Turks and Mongols completed its ruin. Fireplace Adds To Holiday Atmosphere For many families, the holidays would be incomplete without a fireplace. However, a small fire is just as cheerful as a roaring one and much safer. Most people prefer wood logs, although coal or charcoal can be used, especially in small fireplaces with grates. Hardwoods make the best wood fire. Scrap lumber or softwood create too hot a flame and can cause sparks to fly out the chimney. This may be a fire hazard to your roof or nearby trees. If a fire is not out before you retire, push the logs in to the rear of the fireplace or stand them securely into either corner. Be sure the fireplace screen is securely in place. At Christmastime, DO NOT burn wrappings from presents in the fireplace, flames may Hare into the room. Spending Plan Union Soldier Excluded South In the year 1863, a Northern soldier expressed animosity toward his Southern adversaries by excluding them from a New Year greeting penned in his journal. Sam Smyth, a Union Lieutenant fighting in the mud of the Civil War at Holly Springs, Mississippi, made this notation: Happy New Year to all the world, except our Southern Rebel friends, their aiders and abettors. . . Obviously, the entry was made when things were going badly for the North. The journal, with human and personalized descriptions of the Civil War, is among the collections of Lincolniana and Civil War materials in the Wyles Collection at Santa Barbara. California. Is Important Sometimes, only days into the New Year, comes the realization that we spent too much for holiday gifts, and entertaining. That seems to be part of the American way of life. The shock of a forgotten Christmas bill, overextended credit or a suddenly-seriou- s financial problem can be prevented with a simple family financial plan. With the financial picture charted on paper, the family should sit down and discuss where money is to be spent particularly where large purchases such as a car or and house are concerned also long term goals such as college money and retirement. After choices are made, a spending plan should be with a family drafted resolution it be followed carefully. .
