Believe it or not, one year contained 445 days. The longest year was 46 B.C. but we have to go back to the seventh century B.C. to find out why it was so long. That was when Numa Pompilius supposedly created the Roman calendar. Despite being revised several times, this calendar still fell some two months behind the sun by the time of Julius Caesar. Caesar put his experts to work revising the calendar. They came up with a calendar, but couldnt decide what to do with the two months needed to catch up with the sun. The only way they could find to solve the problem STOCKING CUSTOM The custom of hanging stockings by the chimney supposedly began when St. Nicholas, the first Santa Claus, threw three bags of gold through a window. St. Nicholas wished to give dowries anonymously, to the daughters of a bankrupt merchant. He tossed them through the window and one landed in a stocking hung up to dry on the mantelpiece. We now mark time by the Gregorian calendar, instituted by Pope Gregory in 1582 and, despite efforts to substitute other methods of marking time, the Gregorian system will probably be with us for some time. Mathematicians guarantee the method will remain accurate until 2500 A. D. The Gregorian calendar takes into consideration the solar year which actually consists of 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds. These extra hours, minutes and seconds are accounted for by a system of leap years, which keep the calendar and the solar equinoxes congruent. The Gregorian calendar provides that the years divisible by four, exclusive of the years numbering centuries, shall have 366 days. The century-markin- g years are leap years only if they are divisible by four after the ciphers have been The first promise of the Redeemer was made in paradise after the fall of our first parents; the woman and her Son would crush the head of the serpent. The second promise is found in the story of Abraham. This patriarch was chosen as the father of a new nation, and in his seed all the nations of the earth would be blessed. Out of the nation of Abraham the family of David was selected, and out of this family the Saviour of the world would be born, fulfilling the third The stor of peace shines bright around the world.
