Show TOOELE ORDNANCE DEPOT LARGE TIRE REPAIR SHOP What is believed to be the larg est tire repair shop overseas is being . operated by an. Ordnance Tire Repair Company, Army Service Ser-vice Forces, in Italy. The company is commanded by Captain M L. Sheves. Virginia. Colonel Henry E. Miiiton. Commanding Com-manding Officer, Tooele Ordnance Depot said this week that this company turns out on an average 30-day operating period an average aver-age of 534 tires a day, some of which receive three separate repair re-pair operations. In 24 actual operating oper-ating days, 21, 806 tires wer. com pleted. One repair tire rolls off the assembly line every two minutes min-utes fifteen seconds of operating time. During the present critical tire shortage, the value of the work being done by this company is immeasurable. Many trucks used by the transportation of vital sup-plies sup-plies to the Italian front are now using recapped tires. Many., low-lift machines, which are used in unloading slips nnd placing items in depots, wete deadlined for lack of tires until i the Ordnance Company started repairing the size they use. An average of 145 Italian civilians and 60 Italian soldiers are employed each day. Most of the Italian civilians were originally local farmers. m |
