Tenn October 16The President and Mrs Cleveland passed avery a-very quiet day going out in the morning morn-ing for a stroll over the great Deer Park and famous Bell Meade breeding farm After lunch the President and Mrs Cleveland escorted by General Jackson drove into Nashville to pay their respects re-spects to Mrs Polk The affair was made as informal as possible it being designed merely as an interchange of courtesies between the lady of the White House of forty years ago and the lady of today The Polk mansion was I surrounded by a great throng of people I The visitors were received at the Church Street entrance Governor Taylor offering offer-ing his arm to the President and Mrs Cleveland taking tLc arm of Mr George W Fall Governor Taylor made the presentation of the President to Mrs Polk The latter extended her baud and said Mr President lamindeeddtlighted to meet you And I to meet you Mrs Polk replied re-plied the President I have looked forward to this visit with most pleasant anticipation Mrs Cleveland was presented and the two ladies conversed cordially for a few minutes Other gentlemen were then presented to the President and I Mrs Clevelandafter which the conversation conver-sation became general the President devoting himself almost constantly during the brief remainder of his stay to Mrs Polk Their conversation turned principally to the White House and Washington The lady was an interested questioner and the President a willing informant Mrs Cleveland was the object of marked I attention from all the gentlemen present pres-ent Mrs Polk presented Mrs Cleveland Cleve-land a bouquet of Marechaal Neil roses in the name of her grandniece Miss Sadie Polk who sailed yesterday from Liverpool for America She then invited the party to refreshments at which each guest was served with a glass of sherry seventyfive years old The guests after visiting the tomb of President Polk returned to Belle Meade Mrs Vitas is quite exhausted by the fatigue and excitement of the journey from Madison and has been confined to her room nearly all day It is reported re-ported tonight as doubtful whether she will be able to proceed tomorrow NASHVILLE Tenn October 17The streets of the city are crowded as they never were belore since the days of Pap Thomas occupancy and are decorated ffom cellar to crest in the richest manner Mammoth pictures span he thoroughfares and cover the fronts of prominent buildings and banners nominating the guest of the day for a second term are as thick as blackberries The President an l all his party at Belle Meade were early astir and after a leisure breakfast made their way to the picturesque little railroad station upon the place and were in waiting with General Jackson their host who wore the badges and regalia of grand marshal of the day when the special train backtd up from Nashville A short run bronght the train to the fairgrounds on the outskirts of the city where the passengers alighted amid the pomp and ceremony of the days reception re-ception The governor andhis guard mounted and brilliantly uniformed and a corps of marshals were in attendance The guests were placed in carriages and driven to the fair grounds enclosure the handsome club house of the association asso-ciation where members of the committee commit-tee and others of the reception were presented to the President At 845 the procession formed and the march to the city began Ito the tune of a presidential salute of artillery The route was through the fine grounds of Yandei bilt University The people of the ii stitution were drawn upin front of the univt rsity building and as the Presidents i Presi-dents carriage came up they received him with cheers in acknowledgement acknowledge-ment of which he raised its hat and bowed Chancellor Garland addressed the President expressing the pleasure it gave all connected with the institution to welcome him Sttfdeuts waved their hats and cheered again and the march was resumed As it proceded the several divisions of the procession constituting military and civic organizations or-ganizations benevolent orders State county and municipal authorities and city schools were passed in review and fell into their places behind The principal prin-cipal streets of the city were traversed the populace of all grades and conditions condi-tions being out upon the sidewalks When the Maxwell House w as reached Mrs Cleveland and her escort alighted and entered the hotel where she held a reception to the ladies of Nashville The President Presi-dent and procession made its way to the capitol where upon the stand erected for the purpose the necessary formalities took place Governor Tayors speech was a brief but an eloquent elo-quent expression of the hospitality of this section and the President in reply said I regret that my stay today at the capital of Tennessee must be necessarily neces-sarily so brief as to curtail the coveted opportunity to see more at leisure this handsome city and its hospitable hospit-able people He spoke in flattering flatter-ing terms of the beauty of Nashvilles location the fertility of the surrounding country and the great wealth of the mineral resource in the immediate neighborhood which assured to Nashville great material prosperity He then turned to the educational edu-cational advantages of the city which had caused it to be deservedlv known as the Athens of the South lie spokr of Nashville and vicinity as having furnished fur-nished two successful candidate for the Presidency To the grave of Andrew Jackson he said millions of your countrymen turn with reverent enthusiasm and yot are fortunate in numbering among your residents the loved and honored widow of our eleventh President You have also furnished from your neighborhood think five members a presidential 1 cabinet nine United States Senaors two speakers of the House of H < pr sentatives and one Justice of the United States Court With such a history aid with such exmiples the State of Tennessee and its capita have been brought into relations with the operation of the Federal government govern-ment and may claim a large share in its glory and beneficial results The influence of the sentiment engendered by these relations and traditions uickly won back the citizens of the State and city to their old love for the Union after the sad interruption and restored them to the brotherhood in which they had found a noble and honorable career In the years to come I am sure nothing but continued and increasing growth and developement await the people of Tennessee constantly adding to the splendor and importance or her capital citv Upon the conclusion of the address the President was reconducted to the rotunda of the capitol where he received re-ceived the public Thousands of people passed before the President and a lew moments before 12 when it was time to depart a long line still stretched away apparently unending At the Maxwell House thousands of ladies were received by Mrs Cleveland and each gracefully j taken by the hand until the time for departure cut the ceremonies short Mrs Cleveland and her escort took carriages car-riages and at Vine Street were joined by a procession which e corted them to the train Here again several thousand peop e packed the adjaci nt streets and wildly cheered th i party as it passed Promptly at 12 oclock tho train pulled out for Chattanooga anid the shouts ot thousands and the waving of handkerchiefs hand-kerchiefs In numbers enthusiasm and good numor the crowd excelled any that was ever epn in Nashville
