Show Governor Zullcks Report WASHINGTON October 17C Meyer Zulick Governor of Arizona in his annual an-nual report estimates the population of the Territory at 90000 an increase of nearly 50000 over the census estimate of 18SO The aggregate assessed valuation valua-tion of taxable property for the present year is 6 313500 an increase of nearly 6000 000 over 1886 By reduced exp ex-p ndllures increased taxable values and a gradual lessening of the tax rate the Territory is now absolutely on a safe and healthful financial basis The agricultural possibilities of Arizona with proper irrigation continues the report can scarcely be overestimated Its live stock interests are in a flourish ng condition Taken in die aggregat the mining interests of Arizoua are on a safe and ayiug basis The Governor says there are few portions of the republic outsida of Michigan Wisconsin and Washington Territory that contain such extensive bodies of timber above the averas equality I e-quality The public school system of I Arizona is a subject of pride to all of her citizens nnd it pays to its teachers higher salaries than any other State or Territory and requires a higher standard stand-ard of ability The Governor recommends re-commends that the sixteenth and thirty sixth sections of the school lands in every township be sold and the proceeds be aplied to the school purposes of the Territory As to the Indians the report states that of all the tribes in the Territory the Navajos are the most prosperous intelligent and enterprising and doubt It I ss the benlthiest tribe in the United States They nunibtr about 15000 uuls and are increasing it is estimated they own 20000 horses and 1000000 sheep They farm quite extensively and raise good crops The Apaches occupy the San Carlos reservation containing about 2 528 000 apres of the best agricultural land in the Territory Ter-ritory As a rate the report says they are lazy and thievish and I murderous se miugly incapable of civilization As long as the Apache Indian are suffered to remain within the borders of tne Territory continues the Governor just so long will the petce of Arizoni be insecure and her progress be retarded The Governor renews his recommendation of last year that Congress make liberal appropriations appropria-tions for a hydrographic survey of the Territory with a view to obtaining water for irrigation > purposes by storage reservoirs |
