Show J THAT LITTLE BILL Secretary Bolapps Story of the Affair To the Editor of THE HERALD Yesterday morning your paper printed a letter from Mr Sidney Stevens which I would not even pretend pre-tend to notice but for its unjust statement state-ment concerning a committee of the Ogden Chamber of Commerce and as I am probably more conversant with the facts than are the other members I take the liberty of correcting the error The gentleman referred to by Mr SteVens as an ignoramus who sent in a bill of 16 to tbe Chamber of Commerce Com-merce for committee work nevErdid any such thing He never presented a bill for any sum or for any purpose to the Chamber of Commerce The committee on immigration of which the gentleman referred to is one of five members performed a certain work at the direction of the chamber Director Preshaw the chairman reported re-ported and asked that 16 be appronri ated to the committee to pay the expenses ex-penses of an advertising solicitor invited in-vited troni Salt Lake City to pay for bookbinding and for clerical help but not for ordinary committee service The amount was allowed at once MrS Mr-S eveis being present knew the facts and he strongly objected to the payment of the Salt Like solicitors part of the bill but he received no support Director Preshaw made a voucher for the amount and endorsed it to the gentleman gentle-man referred to of his committee as I that gentleman had already paid the I monfy out of his own pocket I gave him my personal check ior the amount some two or thiee weeks after the appropriation ap-propriation had been allowed Mr Stevens was chairman of the finance committee and in a sense of courtesy which I have since seen was sadly wasted I presented that voucher with several others for his endorsement endorse-ment although they had hardly been passd upou by the Chamber and had never been referred to him He refused to give his signature or return the voucher claiming that he individually bad u right to revise the action of tbe entire Chamber or the board of directors direct-ors I was relieved from further annoyance at that time by President Peery and the other directors who promptly approved ap-proved payment of the vouchers without with-out the sanctifying edorsementof Mr Stevens I am sorry that Mr Stevens has felt compelled to make false statements about the private affairs of the Chamber Cham-ber merely to attack an individual member or that the columns of THE HERALD should be used for such purposes pur-poses Yours respectfully HENRY H ROLAPP Secretary of the Ogden Chamber of Commerce I OCTOBER 17 188i |
