' liortl- culturnl experts the - .(hardists of Springville ore prepared to wage war on pests lv spraying. Members of the local Cooperative Krnit Marketing Mar-keting association are advised that spraying materinl is now available at the home of Ed Clyde and every fruit grower of this district is urged I to procure his nllottment of arsen-! arsen-! ate spray and begin spraying at once. If this is (bme. it is pointed out. Springville will have a bumper crop of fruit this year. This is part of a nation-wide campaign cam-paign now being carried on In cooperation coop-eration with the V. S. department of agriculture, the various state agencies, fruit trade organizations, the insecticide industry and others. These organizations, however, must have the hearty cooperation of the orchardists themselves, Mr. I'rice states if the campaign is to succeed. lie must carry out his spraying operations in harmony with the latest advice from the federal fed-eral and state departments of agriculture. agri-culture. "Adopt as a principle in coil ing moth spraying the waging uT :-n in tensive fight against the first brood of larvae by any and all means, as i better and more timely spraying, scraping, and banding of the trees, screening sheds, etc., which will assist as-sist in the elimination of the second and later broods and the necessity for late spray Applications, is the idviee of Mr. Trice. "For every first brood larvae killed there will probably be ten ' less larvae of the second and 100 less larvae of the third brood. Clean up the first brood and there will not be any second brood." Through spraying is given as the most important method of con- trolling the codling moth. When about 90 per cent of the petals have fallen, the calyx spray should be applied. This, it ls pointed out, is much the .most important of all applications and failure to apply it or imperfect work at this time cannot can-not be corrected by later treatments. The tops of the trees are as a rule insufficiently sprayed. Orchardists are advised to use a tower on the spray tank with spray rods and angle nozzles to cover the higher parts of the trees. Direct the spray downward into the apple clusters, whether working from the tower or the ground. Two or three cover sprays for the first brood is advised. The first application should be made, it is said, as the first eggs are about to hatch, which in Utah is about ten days after the calyx spray, the second sec-ond just before the Hatching of mnrimum eggs, and give the third treatment if the egg laying period is extended by irregular emergence of moths, cool weather, etc. |
