Show Left Bank Elbie Jay's Thought ConW By STEVE IIOLBROOK Are there concentration camps in America? The answer depends on what you think the government is doing with its old World War II detention de-tention camps that were used to lock up American Japanese. Five of the camps have recently been renovated and the McCarren act which authorizes these camps has been extended. Now all the President Presi-dent has to do is declare a "State of Emergency" to implement their use as authorized by Title II of the old bill. It might be noted that the bill was passed in the U.S. Senate by a vote of three to two with 95 Senators absent. The new bill is so broad that apparently ap-parently any organization that has a communist in "a position of influence" influ-ence" can be labeled a "communist front organization," and required to print on all literature that it puts out, the following juicy bit of information: in-formation: "Distributed by (or solicited so-licited on behalf of) found by final order of the Subversive Activities Ac-tivities Control Beard to be a com- thought-control act sirgf the & and Sedition' Laws." Later u-S preme Court ruled the acts wea sures to register as a commmM and other provisions as uiconstM-tional uiconstM-tional but the new w is trying to circumvent the courts decision by having the government register for you if you happen to be what they might consider subversive. Events of the past several month: have made it painfully apparer: that the government has begun; serious and systematic attempt i repression such as the "pre-eiri munist front organization." Of course the question as to what is and what isn't a communist will be most crucial. It will be most shocking shock-ing if the courts allow these procedures pro-cedures to go unchecked, but these are strange times. Thought Control Apparently the ai mof congress in enacting these new attempts at thought control is to stifle the peace movement, black power groups, and radical poverty workers. The first attempt to enforce this new law has been with the W.E.B. Du-Bois Du-Bois Clubs of America. The Attorney At-torney General has asked the SACB to register them as a subversive group. That's right, this group of radicals must forget the promise of the constitution for free speech and right of assembly because the country is going to try an experiment experi-ment of thought control. NBC's Edwin Ed-win Neuman has already reported the expressed wish of President Johnson that the newspapers and other media constrain themselves from printing all they know and just print what the government wants the people to know for the good of the war effort. President Truman called the or-iginal or-iginal McCarran act "The worst tive" arrest of H.
