approximately lege of Eastern Utah's library collection were culled from the shelves and stored in the basement of the old gym Recently they were taken to the waste storage facility in East Carbon The library staff library committee and administration stated that they were unaware that the books were disposed of until after the fact “The administration made an attempt to find the books and to salvage some of them By the time the public relations department was able to locate the books they were already covered with debris at the dump” said Academic Vice President Brent Haddock In 1992 the library was reviewed for accreditation The reviewers informed the staff that they should weed out about 25 percent of their collection from the shelves During the spring and summer the staff used what Library Director Rob Dolan termed as “very conservative” standards for weeding the collection onc-quart- cr Faculty and students were invited to the library to review which hooks were taken from the shelves To Dolan's knowledge all the hooks weeded from the shelves that were requested by faculty to stay in the library's collection were kept He estimates that of the books taken from the collection were put back by the request of the faculty one-four- th my opinion we arc no than the Nazis they burned the classics during the crystal In night" George Uhlig The library's criteria for weeding the book collection included calling any outdated book or a book in bad condition “We got all the books out that the library staff thought we needed We had given the faculty what I thought was more than enough lime to look at them As far as I know everything in that gym was not wanted" Dolan said In March 1995 Director of Fa cilities Gene Carlson informed Dolan that the old gym was to be tom down to make room for the new Student Service Ccnlerand everything stored in the building was to be removed as soon as possible The old gym contained things such as hooks and old desks that “we the library staff had looked over time and time again to sec if anyone could salvage it no one did So basically I told him Carlson that if it's there no one appears to want it We have to get rid of it We can't store it over there old gym and there is no place to store it here library" Dolan said In response to disposing the books that were in the old gym Carlson stated “The director of the library told us physical plant that they wanted nothing and to go ahead and to dispose of them books and (hat is exactly what the physical plant people did “They books were put into a bunker and hauled off by Price City Sanitation Where they went I don't knowpmh-abl- y to the dump in East Carbon” The hooks were discarded at the waste disposal facility so the old gym see Library page 3 18th Annual Women's Conference "The School With No Name" by Mary Ann Southards staff writer streamed down faces as Bess told of her daily at the School With No Name during CEU's 18th Annual Women's Conference Using no notes and holding a tissue to wipe away her tears she methodically described her beloved children she has taught the past seven years Bess first described a little girl named Dana "As the children made a mad rush for the door I sighed with relief Working at my desk I noticed Dana was still milling around the room After she was sure the classroom would stay empty Dana made her way to the front of the room hiding something behind her back Dana placed her gift on Bess' desk and took a step back ”1 have something that will help you” she said "Something” was a black and white stuffed bear A year after Bess began leaching at the school she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer After undergoing surgery in 1989 she continued treatments She was returning for one of her final treat Tears ments the Christmas Dana attended the school “This is Bear and he's my friend lie'll go with you to the hospital and when yourtummy starts to hurt squeeze him It helps to hold him tight when you're afraid It really works" she promised Then Dana presented her second gift "Do you know who this is?" she asked as she held a picture towards Bess in the shelter's school The School With there were homeless families out She holds a bachelor's in education from elementary degree the University of Utah is married and there" No Name has three children She won the Golden Deeds Award for dedication to homeless youth in 1992 the Utah Children Award for Outstanding Service to Children in 1991 and the Creative Community Leadership Award given Bess nodded "Who?" she questioned by the University of Utah in "Jesus" 1993 “That's right" she said "When I've been scared he's helped me and he'll help you too You can put him on your mirror and when it gels really bad you can ask him to help you feel better lie'll whisper in your ear Ml's okay Stacey it's almost over'" old attending the Dana a School With No Name in the Salt Lake City homeless shelter was willing to give two of her only possessions to someone who had made a great impact on her life Dana had been found only a few months earlier locked in a cellar holding in one hand her little brother and in the other her "Bear" Stacey Bess author of "Nobody Don't Love Nobody" has taught seven years ar Bess started teaching at the School With No Name in of January 988 She went and applied for the job only because her husband had asked her to When 1 ler first day on the job proved interesting When she had finally found the address under the 600 South Viaduct she realized she didn't really know where the shelter school was located Slowly she rolled down the car window trying to find the courage to ask where the shelter school was when a wild looking man tapped on her I passenger window "You lost ma'am?” the man asked Frightened she looked at the man unsure of what to say when he ofof Bess fered to help author Stacey Don’t Love Nobody" her with her "Nobody they told her the which where handed She him stuff her they hiring position purse brieffor she was shocked "My stereotype of case and oilier belongings then prohomelessness was of men When they ceeded to get out of the car told me about the position I naively "I'll bet you're the new teacher" he I said thought 'Wail a minute can’t teach I was shocked to learn "I am" Bess responded grown-ups' "You got the right place I'm Joe" he declared lie then proceeded to give Bess a lesson on street survival: never give all your belongings to a stranger Roll un your car window and lock your door Walk directly to where you are going and back to the car So far Bess had broken the first two of these rules One of the many children Bess saw running around outside the shelter stopped in front of her car to tie his shoe This one child would be Bess' inspiration to not quit During her years of working at the shelter school she is often times required to memorize 300 to 400 names Often times she has students which attending for only a month a few weeks or even a few days Yet she goes out of her way to be able to communication on a personal basis with each of these children Bess goes out of her way to help these children in any way possible She lakes the older ones to school provides clothing and often limes a home for those that the shelter just doesn't have room for She experiences their heartaches their triumphs and shares the joy of laughter with them
