May II 1995 Page 3 Putting public security ahead of people's civil liberties Dear editor I am appalled at the information recently reported (May 4) that the American people arc willing to sacrifice their rights for "peace" An Associated Press poll reported that 54 percent of those respondi ng put public security ahead of people's civil liberties This attitude is an absolutely sure prelude to a police state This is how Miller came to power in Germany: he promised to end the fighting and turmoil in the streets and the German people believed him! The rest is history The survey also indicated that 61 percent believed that there would be more incidents like the bombing in Oklahoma City With this I have to agree This country is almost totally vulnerable to g such terrorist attacks And tragically it is the very liberal establishment which made us so vulnerable that is now offering the Omnibus Counterterrorism Act of 995 as their proposed "solution" to the problem which they themselves created Why arc we so vulnerable? Why docs America stand virtually naked before terrorist threats both foreign and domestic? The counter-terroribill wasdraflcd by Janet Reno's Justice Department It was Janet Reno's predecessor and ideological soulmate Attorney General Edward Levi who was largely responsible for our dire left-win- 1 st 1 1 predicament today In response to questions demanding to know why the FBI had not infiltrated and investigated various "right wing" organizations terrorist "experts" point out that the FBI has been operating under severe restrictions imposed by Levi 20 years ago True as far as it goes! The full story is grimmer by far As reported in the New American magazine in 1975 President Gerald Ford appointed Levi as attorney general and commissioned him with the rcsponsibilityofdrawingupncw"guidelincs"forthcFBrsdomcstic intelligence operations Levi a longtime leftist was a member of the officially designated communist front National Lawyers Guild (NLG) One of the most outrageous appointments in US history: a man with a long standing affiliation with one of the most anti-Fsubversive anti-poliorganizations in the country being named to the highest law enforcement post in the land and put in charge of the FBI ce The Levi handcuffs prohibited the FBI from investigating individuals or organizations unless it had (I) information that a federal crime had already been committed or (2) one was about to he committed within 48 hours Investigations had to be ended in 90 days and all files had to he made avai I able to those being investigated In addition Lxvi's subordinate FBI Director Clarence Kelly did everything in his power to demoralize the FBI Under J Edgar Hoover the FBI had been an integral part of a vital network of investigative bodies which provided a multilayered defense against terrorism but an equal defense against a centralized national police force The same leftwing forces which essentially destroyed the FBI also one by one destroyed the other layers of our defenses against terrorism It is a frightening record: The Subversive Activities Control Board Terminated The Internal Security Division of the Justice Dept Terminated The House Internal Security Subcommittee Terminated The Senate Internal Security Subcommittee Terminated The AG's List of Subversive Organizations Terminated units of the Armed Forces - Severely Limited Investigative committees of most state legislatures Terminated Intelligence unitsof most stale and local police forces -- Terminated or severely restricted The Immigration and Naturalization Service and the Border Patrol Overwhelmed undermanned and severely restricted The decades-lon- g running battle by the militant left to dismantle fedcral-stalc-loc- al - - - Counter-intelligen- -- ce - - all legitimate domestic intelligence was a roaring success All this destruction was brought about by a cabal of leftwing organizations in concert with their ideological comrades in the media to protect their operations from investigation and prosecution Now more than ever it is apparent that these defenses msut be rebuilt It is also that we must not allow ourselves to be stampeded into embracing the false and dangerous "solutions" being offered by the very forces which maneuvered us into this selfc-cvide- nl jeopardy The new powers sought for the federal government will if allowed to become law almost certainly not he used against the violent and subversive organizations traditionally investigated by the FB I communists terrorists fascists Nazis Ku Klux Klansmen the Mafia etc - but against those that Janet Reno and present FBI Director Louis Freeh consider the real "threats" to American security: religious "extremists" activists UN opponents and other "politically incorrect" Americans thccstahlishmcni media generally categorized as "extreme right wing" The Omnibus Counterterrorism Bill (S 390) would expand (he federal governments wire lapping authority expand its access to our hank accounts and would allow the President to designate as "terrorist" any group he finds "detrimental" (?) to US interests The bill would provide for the nationalization of most of the few remaining areas of law enforcement not already usurped by the federal government It is a prescription for a national police force an embryonic gestapo The truly tragic thing is that many normally conservative members of the House and Senate arc unthinkingly backing this bill because of what happened in Oklahoma City We must write call fax them to convince (hem that this bill is not the answer to preventing such incidents in the future Albert VBuncs - -- gun-owne- rs College students are amassing major debts in credit card charges years to pay off this credit card only if you make no new purchases You will also end up paying about $2700 total instead of the mere $1 500 you spent on purchases It is called interest folks and some by Brittni Coe staff writer Ahh the many pleasures of life the great outdoors the beautiful wcatlicr great people and the beauty of credit cards It doesn't take much to enjoy life's simple pleasures and each can bring so much happiness Well if it is hard for you to find enjoyment in any one of these "little pleasures" could it be the joy and happiness of the credit card pleasure in life has left you in debt up to your cars and you arc slowly drowning? Sure you have a new outfit every week but no job to support the “charge it" habit If this spending frenzy has left you in a bind I think I can help Well Cosmo and I In case your problem happens to be with one ol thc other “little pleasures" you find in life work it out I am just a credit card expert If you're thinking a credit card will solve all of your problems you need me to of you arc paying it up the ying yang Do yourself a favor avoid it! Now as depressing as this may sound don't nin off and commit suicide or anything stupid because we all have our vulnerabilities Then someone else will have to pay off the debt Spending happens to be my biggest weakness and a few of yours as well I am sure Don't worry we can help get this problem under control and solved Let's make a list of priorities to accomplish in order to get out of debt alive more quickly and less costly First don't apply to any more credit card companies Just because one card is maxed out and you feel the need to splurge doesn't mean you need a new card Resist the temptation! Second don't put any more purchases on any of your cards More spending equals long term debt und major not only solve yourcredit problems hut your thinking as well As a college student you need to face it up interest charges that arc not lax deductable Third (this one's a front As a college student you most likely have little to no money managing skills Not only this you arc a prime target for all credit card companies Citibank a major company that distributes their own cards says their most used program is Student Visa They arc making millions of dollars a year from this program The ‘buy now pay later' concept has become appealing to many of us In fact it has gone to our heads It is relatively easy for any college student to get a credit card Credit companies love us We have little to no money und use our credit cards often in place of the cash we don't have The average college student has one to two credit cards with an in debt average of $1500 in credit and they arc already $2000 or Americans Indeed Cosmopolitan magazine says that 80 percent who arc in debt in the amount of $500 arc college students At least we arc in the top of the class Tor something! I'm proud of you! For instance say you have a debt of $ 500 and pay (he minimum lf amount due each month You will end up taking eight and 1 one-ha- biggy) get yourself a job! I know the “J" word is taboo around these parts but deal with it This is a must if you arc going to pay off your debts We can't live off the V'' and be a part of the real world ol’ parents forever It's a nice thought though Fourth call yourcredit card company and tell them to reduce your interest! Sound bizarre? Well Dr Rhonda Michaels a credit counselor in Massachusetts and who recently appeared on the Oprah television show says your interest rales arc relatively high She says that two out of three credit card companies will he willing to reduce your interest by up to eight percent All you have to do is ask Fifth and most important make a commitment! Fay your credit companies a set amount each month even when your minimum goes down This will lower the amount of interest you accumulate and will cut more than half the time it takes you to pay off the card So instead of eight years and $500 in interest it should lake you about three years and about $250 in interest This should be very appealing I promise if you do these Five steps and stick by them yourcredit will be phenomenal not to mention yourdeht will virtually disappear So if you feel like your drowning in debt and want to find a solution this is something that will work You may not sec the results and effects short term but it brings about long-terin world" and it is so “real the We out arc gratification just starting much better to start out debt free Oh I forgot to add one step Icam to throw away credit card applications! Don't read them over and keep them around to tempt you “just in case” Get rid of them fast Pretend they arc like the atomic bomb of money You can't afford the explosion debt creates I earn to tell yourself und others (like credit companies begging you to join) no and before you know it this little debt and spending fetish will be cured in no time! You will be thanking me for this in the future! m Library f ('imliniinl from ixmr I ) could be demolished There was no evidence from the sources interviewed that funding was appropriated by the stale to demolish the Old Gym or to build the Student Service Center The only money CEU has received is design money that will be used to create the plans for the center Nancy Tackas chairperson for the library committee slated that she and the committee were outraged that the books were destroyed Student Chris Theodosis said (hat he tried to check out Charles Darwin's The Origin ofSwcies Alter searching the library shelves for the book lie was unable to locate it When he asked a member of the library staff about the book she replied that the library was "revising (heir collection and that it was most likely among tliosc outdated btmks which arc no longer useful" In an message to Haddock titled "Das Kryslial Nacht!" George Uhlig compared the library throwing the books away to the Nazis “In my opinion we arc no better than the Nazis when they burned the classics during the crystal night At least they got heat generated from the hooks we got nothing What a pity a monumental screw up Nothing you can do about it now but I would appreciate being given the privilege of going through llie next books we throw away"
