student learning from the children many things she may not have learned elsewhere such as having fun and not taking things so seriously Danny a junior high aged student taught her to lighten up and have fun One morning when she picked up Danny to take him to the junior high and help him register she ended up with his six brothers and sisters tagging along While they wailed at a red light Danny leaned over the seat and turned up the radio Two blocks later as Bess watched the kids in the rearview mirror she noticed a police officer slowly approaching the side of her car She quickly snapped the radio off and told the kids to sit quietly so she wouldn't get a ticket Suddenly the kids began rolling down the window The police officer had pulled up and was now rolling his win- dow down to chastise her “Please get the children into the car" he said with authority Bess began to apologize hut Danny broke in before she could get a word out “But sir" he said dramatically “I farted and we'll all die of suffocation if we get back in" The officer started to laugh and drove on This is just one of the many times Bess would see the lighter side of the children who taught her so much The lessons learned from her students extend far beyond homelessness “they are lessons in how to love in giving and receiving in the power love has to heal and to help They are also lessons in how keeping silent or acting un kindly can affect a human being and how the damage done to one person can sometimes be passed on to the next generation" One of Bess' greatest success stories is that of Zachary lie was his life “Since I came back I've went to school with Stacey to help her kids and it makes me feel gtxxl to see the changes that have taken place The school's four times bigger it’s cleaner they've got regular desks and more books the young boy who had stopped to tie his shoe in front of her car on her They've got paper they've got pencils they've got everything now Before we didn't have And I feel good because we had a couple of rst day He f i would come in a form bond with Bess which but now they have would change his come in actors and all lire Zach first showed up at kinds people It's the shelter school when Years later he would return he was to help Bess with her kids He would also be the only person in his family on either side to graduate from high school and take charge to change the course of 1 1 of unbe- lievable and it makes me feel good that I can sit down and help the kids with their math or something because I’ve stayed in school and know how to do it" Bess believes the best way to teach is to give and she says “when you have I nothing to give you give the gift of love" But for these children to survive they must connect with other teachers and adults who will hang on to them and keep them from falling through (he cracks and becoming another statistic d With poverty changing the face of homelessness in America more and more of the homeless are families which means more and more of the homeless arc children Though Bess goes above and beyond the call of duly she still feels that she should do more "I still face the frustration in my work of wanting to do more It would be more accurate to say that I want to dictate more results I want homes food education and security for my children I want jobs for their parents But we can't impose our own goals wishes or help on anyone We can only teach support and love We give them more opportunities more choices Then we love them regardless of the choices they make hoping that they will learn to make better ones in the future” We as individuals and as a society need to reach out and help those around us even if the only help we are giving is just that the simple act of giving For giving should be enough “Give them the tools to make good choices They will remember the positive things we put into their lives They will remember us and many of their choices will be good because of what they were given in their childhood We can make a difference" ar source management Machclle Worthen took third in business law For computer applications Steve Montoya placed first and Donald Fletcher fifth In Mr Future Business Executive Dcrin Haas placed ninth and in Ms Future Business Executive Christie Roth placed second Pepper Baxter seventh and Brook Johnson wide-sprea- eighth Kllcd by a dmnk driver an February 27 1994 on Bell Blvd in Cedar Path Texas If you don’t stop your friend from driving drunk who will?
