Show T INVITATION TRACK MEET IS BIG SUCCESS Five Records Are Broken in the High School Division Divi-sion of Meet. The fourteenth annual invitation track and field meet and relay carnival car-nival of the Young university was -.he greatest suet-ess attained thus !ar by the athletic management of he university. Hundreds of athletes from the ligh schools and junior colleges of :he state were in attendance and participated in the various events. The meet decidedly stamped the "Y" invitation carnival as one of the three great divisional meets of the United States. The large increase in the carnival will be in years to come. It was freely predicted among the athletic leaders at the meet that in years to come the best athletes from the entire intermoun-tain intermoun-tain region would be gathered here to compete for championship honors. Five invitation meet records in the high school division were broken during the carnival, the mile run, shot put, discuss throw, pole vault and javelin throw. Baker of Beaver added 9 feet and 10 inches to the javelin throw of 1 151 feet and 1 inch established by Carman of West high in 1922. Baker's throw was 1G0 feet 11 inches. Dern of East high broke both of the records made last year by Cox of Ogden in the discuss and the shot put. The discuss record was beaten j 3 feet, S inches and the sot put l foot two inches. j Burt of Boxelder lowered the mile I run record by eight seconds. The j new record is 4 minutes 36 seconds1. ; Hogan of West high made the old record In 1921, it being 4 minutes 42 seconds. The pole vault record established in 1921 by Xeilsen of American Fork, now of the B. Y. U., was j bettered 1 inch by Harris of Bear) River. The new record is 10 feet 7, inches. I Among the Provo boys who ; showed up to exceptional advantage in the meet were Hawkins, who -ccm fourth in tho mile run in the' high school division ; tutty,--viu took first in the mile and second in the half mile in the junior high j school division ; Ripple, who took ! third in the half mile in the junior j high division. Springville had several athletes ' both 'in the high school and the : junior high divisions who marked j themselves with honor in the meet. , Paul Thorne, tho leading all-round athlete of the Springville school, , took third place in the pentathlon') with IS points. In a field of 35 con-i tostants he took third place in the broad jump and the 1500 meter run and fourth place in the javelin, discuss dis-cuss and 200 meter run. Crandal took third place in the half mile run of the non-letter men in the high school division. In the junior high school division Johnson of Springville took first place in the 100 yard and 220 yard dashes. Conover and Gudmundsen took second and third, respectively, in- the high jump. |
