Show ALL ENTRY RECORDS SHATTERED 14T1I ANNUAL T INVITATION TRACK AND RELAY CARNIVAL With the sun smiling benevolently from an almost cloudless cloud-less sky, hundreds of athletes from the high schools and j colleges from a radius of several hundred miles from Provo I gathered in the university city Saturday for the fourteenth annual "Y" invitation meet and relay carnival. Scores of I students from the elementary schools of Utah county also ! participated in the meet. With teams coming from all parts of Utah and from ; the southern part of Idaho, the 1924 carnival shattered all entry records during its fourteen years, and marked the "Y" ; meet as one of the three large divisional meets of the United States, taking its place, in a modified way, with the Penn and the Drake relay meets. Among the most enthusiastic participants of the meet were the boys and girls of the lower and upper grades anc" the junior high schools. Long before 10 o'clock these repre sentatives from the schools of the surrounding communitiei were on the Maeser hill anxiously awaiting the time whei they could compete in the track events and bring honor anc credit to themselves and their respective schools. The entire forenoon was devoted to the events of the younger boys and girls while the afternoon was occupied by I the high school, junior college and the university meets. Johnson of Springville finished first in final 100-yard dash in junior high division. By pitching 10 ringers C. Lavar Jensen of the B. Y. U. won the singles horseshoe pitching contest from Archie Bobbins, also of B. Y. U. Robbins had eliminated Kenneth Ken-neth Weight of Provo High. The doubles won by H. R. Merrill and Ray Olpin form Lavar Jensen and Archie Bobbins. Burke of Box Elder broke the state record in the mile run for high school letter man, clipping it off in four minutes 30 seconds and finishing 75 yards ahead of Hart of Granite. Hawkins of Provo led the more than 25 eucnmts in "the high school non-letter men mile run for the first three-quarters of the race. He finished fourth, Irvine of West ' High, Fairbnrn of Jordan, and j Davies of West High finishing i ahead of him. " . . . . , Fred Richards of Pleasant Grove won the B. Y. U. two-mile: run, coming in a quarter of a mile ahead of his nearest competitor. His time was 10 minutes o0 seconds. ; Archie Sellers of Provo won the j junior high mile run in 5 minutes 2-t seconds. Conover and Gudmundsen of Springville won the second and i bird places, respectively, in the junior high school high jump. Ripple of Provo High came in third in the 440-yard dash in the junior high division. Every event was contested as keenly as any of those of the afternoon. ' Silver City had several grade school students in these meets. All of the Provo schools were represented, repre-sented, the majority, however, coming com-ing from the Franklin, the Parker, and the B. Y. U. training school. : The Spencer school on Provo 'Bench had four boys and two girls j entered, while the Lehi schools werel t represented by 12 boys and sis ' : girls. The largest number of boys and ; girls from the upper grades represented repre-sented in the meet were from Pay-bod, Pay-bod, there being 32 girls and 20 : boys. Franklin school took the forenoon : nK'"f, winning most of the events for the lower grade girls, lower grade boys, and upper grade boys (aid upper grade girls. EiiLiene Terry of the Franklin si'boul was the stall performer in ' the lower grade division for the Vr, v:inrt;ug first place .in the "ill-yard d;ish, 440-yard run, and the j broiul jump, and second in the Bui-yard dash. All three girls helped Franklin win the relay. ond in junior high board jump. Paul Keeler ran a pretty race in 220 dash winning the third heat for the non-letter men against six contestants. Johnson of Springville junior high took first place in the second heat of the 220 yard dash. In the . third heat Harding of Lincoln high came in first. Clinton Larson, former B. Y. U. j star high jumper, who is training, for the Olympic games, gave an ex-1 hibition in the high jump. He easily eas-ily cleared the bar at G feet 1 inch but failed in his attempt at 0 feet 4 inches. Monte Groesbeck of Springville took an easy half mile in the B. Y. U. events. All non-letter men won the first three places, Carlyle Maw coming second and Fred Richards third. Crandall of Springville took first place in the first heat of half mile non-letter high school men. He took third in final making it in 2 minutes 11 seconds. oJlinson of Springville and Harding Hard-ing of Lincoln high took first and second, respectively, in the 220-yard dash, in the junior high division. Sellers of Provo junior high after taking first in the mile captured second in the half mile. Hippie of Provo took third. Beekwith of East high won the pentathlon' by scoring eight points, winning first in the 200 meters and 1500 meters nnd second in the broad jump, javelin nnd discuss. Forrester of Delta won second place with 11 points: Thorne of Springville, third with 18 points; Hutchings of Beaver 20 points: Steed of nDvis 21 points; Taylor of Salina 27 points. Denn Norton of the Parker school wised out Grace Harris of the Franklin school by one point as the largest scorer' in (lie upper grade division for the girls. Dean took first ia the high jump and second in the 50 nnd 75-yard dashes, while Grace look first in the two dashes. Wayne Carson of Lehi took the major honors in the upper gradV; division for boys,, capturing first 1'lace in the 220-yard dash, pole vault, high jump and broad lump, and second in the 100-yard dash. Joseph Phillips of Parker was Mcond with ten points, Wells Hoover of Parker, third with eight P'onts, and Andrew Lassen of Franklin with six points. in the junior high school girls' division Josephine Wiguall of Pay-son Pay-son came first with ten points, tak-iii? tak-iii? first place in the high jump nnd tne BO-yard dash.
