NEWS EDITOR Tony Barbano, a junior in ceramics, fell in love with art at an early age—now he's using it to make a living. It was in kindergarten that Barbano had his first real encounter with art, and in his freshman year of high school he started to look at art as a possible career. Barbano graduated from Murray High School, spending a lot of his time in the school's ceramics studio, where he was also a teacher's assistant. Now, he works with a variety of materials, not limiting himself to a single type of work. Barbano said he plays with wood, glass, metal and ceramics. He has his master's in welding. "I like being able to create an original piece that nobody else has created," he said. "Just something genuine. Your voice." Of all the possible artwork, Barbano likes to make things that are useful. "I like making functional art, but I also like to make art that has something to say for itself," he said. Like many artists, Barbano has some individuals who inspired him—Alex Grey, a New York-based artist; Dale Chihuly, an NATHAN SWEET/The Daily Utah Chronicle Toni Barbano, a junior in ceramics, uses a unique technique by detonating fire crackers in the pots while the clay is still moist to create pottery for plants. American glass sculptor; and Kristian Merwin, a local glass sculptor. Barbano said he would like to do a variety of work with his talents. "I want to mix my mediums," he said. Barbano is preparing for the Burning Man festival, where he can share his work. The festival will be in Black Rock City, Nev., this summer, and Barbano will bring some of his ceramic works to bury for other artists to find. The festival will feature the artwork of individuals from a variety of places, as well as live music. j.bennett@ chronicle.utah.edu MAOMI BLACKBURN/The Daily Utah Chronicle MAOMI BLACKBURN/The Daily Utah Chronicle Tony Barbano blows glass at his studio.
