Show DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE 8 Tuesday, April 19, 2011 SENIORS continued from Page 6 "You can always find little things that you could have done better, but we hit 24for-24 and didn't count a fall all year," Marsden said. "I don't know if we have ever had a year where we've done that. I've said all year that this is the little team that could. They just hung in there and plugged along." The Utes are losing just two seniors to graduation, Gael Mackie and Jacquelyn Johnson. Senior Kyndal Robarts—who holds the team's high score in the all-around with a 39.6—received a medical redshirt after competing in just two meets this season. Mackie, a former Olympian who competed for Canada, rounds out her time at Utah with a 9.925 on the bars, which she earned on the last routine of Utah's final rotation during the Super Six. During her four years at Utah, Mackie earned career highs of 9.825 on vault, 9.925 on bars, 9.85 on beam and 9.8 on floor. In the all-around, her best score was a 39.125. Mackie has competed for four NCAA Championships, including a ioth-place individual finish on bars in 2010. Johnson finishes her time at Utah with her senior season being the strongest of her career. Until this year, Johnson never assumed the role of a four-event or even three-apparatus gymnast, but at the end of February she emerged as one of Utah's all-arounders. In her debut in the all-around, she scored a 39.225. Johnson performed more than a third of her career routines at Utah during her senior year. Now, with five incoming freshmen—Georgia Dabritz (Newburyport, Mass.), Tory Wilson (Albuquerque, N.M.), Kailah Delaney (Yorba Linda, Calif.), Kassandra Lopez (Tucson, Ariz.) and Becky Tutka (Upper Black Eddy, Pa.)—the Utes are quickly turning their focus to the 2012 season. Although this year's finish left the team wanting more, it has also given Utah renewed focus on what needs to hap- Sign up now ballypeag Deals for food, entertainment and everything else for students, facult and staff at the University of Utah. She is one of the 10 gymnasts from this year who will be returning for next year's squad. Only two Red Rocks, Gael Mackie and Jacquelyn Johnson, are graduating. pen before next year. "Last year I went through it myself," said junior Stephanie McAllister. "After the season I went back and looked at what I did and needed to work on, and now we can all do that. Being here and seeing those top teams, we're already talk- BULLINGER continued from Page 7 Los Angeles Lakers (No. 2 seed Western Conference): The Lakers were the second team to deliver a genuine surprise in their opening game. The defending champs fell to the New Orleans Hornets 109-10o as point guard Chris Paul torched them for 33 points and 14 helpers. The Lakers are a more complete team than the Spurs, but I'd say they have a better chance of being upset in the first round. The Spurs don't have a full-fledged star to deal with, and the Lakers have to contain Paul, who is one of the league's best point guards. Chicago Bulls (No. i seed Eastern Conference): It took some late-game heroics for the Bulls to defeat the Indiana Pacers 104-99 in game one. It was a narrow win, but coming back from ing about the things we can work on and be even better next year." Utah will be hosting two major meets next year, including the Pac-io Championship as well as an NCAA qualifying regional meet. "To have a conference for a 12-point deficit was a good sign for a team relying on a young star. Derrick Rose was sensational (39 points, 6 assists), and the Bulls showed that they are the most complete team in the playoffs. Miami Heat (No. 2 seed Eastern Conference): The Heat had the easiest opener among the top seeds in beating the Philadelphia 76ers, 97-89. Their defense was solid, Chris Bosh played well, and LeBron James and Dwyane Wade seemed to have their roles figured out. If this keeps up, the Heat might cruise to the conference finals, unless Boston can improve. Boston Celtics (No. 3 seed Eastern Conference): Boston won its opening game but didn't look good doing so. Ray Allen's 3-pointer in the final seconds delivered an 87-85 win, but the Celtics just aren't the same team the first time and host the meet, that is going to be great for us," McAllister said. "We know all the teams and what we need to do, so nothing will be unexpected for us. We know what it takes to get there." k.price@ chronicle.utah.edu without Kendrick Perkins. The proof lies in Amar'e Stoudemire's numbers. He scored 28 points and snagged rebounds to lead the New York Knicks in their near-upset. The Knicks are talented, but have yet to play like a title contender. Boston played down to New York's level, not the other way around. In other words, it's a toss-up right now I think Chicago is the favorite in the East, but Miami is scary good if James, Bosh and Wade all perform well. Boston and San Antonio are still contenders, but they are so old that things have to work out just right for them to reach the Finals. The Lakers are still the favorites out West, but things are murkier than they were two weeks ago. You can't trust the traditional powers right now, which means these playoffs could be more compelling than ever. 111111111111111111111111111 tusActt see j.bullinger@ chronicle.utah.edu We"arcron the tyteetai need more tweets? t tWa tW POWERBALL KARAOKE twi twe need afore t ets? vv twe tlemani AH mothertwyckeri Arrive early for your chance at cash drawings just for singing! • E CC DIAMONDS he speak twitter twidiot • ma Itwer.--it W Diamond Band of nE eted tweei d little har need more tweets? k hitter speak twitter Clue #3 tweet le • ac twidlot speak twitter h rd t twee19 maltweeted eet ker.
