PEOPLE AND OUTDOOR FUN Owlz finish up week-long week-long road trip fife fi Cody Relative unknown Nick Nelson of UVSC Jared Lloyd DAILY HERALD Midway through Sunday's 36-hole final round at the 109th Utah State Amateur Championships Champion-ships at Thanksgiving Point golf course, Utah Valley State College junior golfer Nick Nelson Nel-son had watched a three-hole lead over opponent Scott Clark evaporate into a one-hole deficit defi-cit in just five holes. But Nelson isn't one to panic, especially in match play. Why should he? He's never lost a competitive match-play event. "I like knowing where I'm at, knowing what I have to do," Nelson explained. "I'm very competitive in everything and fortunately that's worked for me in match play." That record remained intact as Nelson bounced back to take the lead and eventually the title, beating Clark one-up to be crowned 2007 Utah State Amateur champion. "I'm very excited," said Nelson, who graduated from Lone Peak in 2002. "I think more than anything it will open doors for me down the road and it will give me confidence in the next couple of tournaments. tourna-ments. Hopefully I'll be able to go out and play like I did here." Even though Clark ended up in second place, he said the title matchup was "a blast." "That was like playing with a buddy when both of you are having good days," Clark said. "You go back and forth, each of you getting birdies. OREM 229-3600 NORTH COUNTY The Owlz came out of the chute early in Billings, and they continued to pour it on with hot hitting and stellar pitching in their 1 1-3 pounding of the Mustangs at Cobb Field last Thursday. After losing 9-3 on Wednesday night, Orem scored eight runs in the first three frames and added three more in the fifth en route to beating the Mustangs for the first time this season. Andrew Romine went 4-for4 4-for4 and scored the first run of the game and drove in the second. The Owlz sent 1 1 guys to the dish in a six -run third in which they had the bases loaded 5 times. Romine drove in his second run in the third then tripled home a run in the three run fifth. Jordan Walden worked a perfect first two innings then ran into trouble and gave way to David Hurst in the third. The lefty from Florida tossed 2 23 frames of one-hit ball to gain his third win of the year. t Mustangs 6, Owlz 5: At Billings, Bill-ings, the Owlz lost their second extra inning game of the season, sea-son, this time going down in 12 frames on Friday. The clubs matched runs in the first then Orem took a 4-1 lead with single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings. ' Chris Armstrong, who was solid in relief of Lou Green who made his first start for the Owlz. Armstrong retired ten straight Mustangs at one point before allowing three in the seventh to tie it at 4 apiece.
