Less than a year removed from Tommy John Surgery, Taylor's fastball is back up to the low-90s range. Peak velocity veloc-ity isn't normally reached until 18 months after the surgery, which bodes well for Taylor, whose fastball could reach as high as the mid-90s after he fully recovers. During his high school and college col-lege careers, where he primarily played shortstop, Taylor was hesitant to toe the rubter on the mound, however his growing age played a major role in his change of heart. "It was basically my age," Taylor, who will turn 25 next Thursday, said to insidetheivy. com, a Cubs fan website. "As a pitcher, it doesn't really matter how old you are. There are only so many good arms that can throw strikes." Although the sample size is still relatively small, Taylor's switch to the mound has been successful thus far. In 10.1 innings in-nings for the rookie league Mesa Cubs, Taylor is 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA. He has struck out five batters bat-ters while allowing only eight hits and holding opponents to a .211 batting average against him. I Jones taking his game to Japan: For the better part of eight minor league seasons, former Mountain View and UVSC baseball star Mitch Jones awaited a chance to show his wares on the major league leveL After that chance never came, Jones had his contract con-tract sold to the Hokkaido Nippon Nip-pon Ham Fighters last month and will make an effort to make his mark on the Japanese Baseball Base-ball League. After setting a school record at Arizona State with 27 home runs in his final season, Jones was drafted in the seventh round by the Yankees. After seven seasons in the Yankees organization organiza-tion which were highlighted by four minor league all-star appearances appear-ances and a few brief call-ups to New York, Jones opted to go to the Dodgers organization for the 2007 season. In spite of the fact that JoneS was tearing up the Pacific Coast League to the tune of a .303 average with 19 home runs and 60 RBI in 52 games for the Las Vegas 51s, the Dodgers sold his contract to the Fighters after the defending Japanese league champions cham-pions expressed interest. Jones, who had been stuck with the label of a AAAA player, meaning he is too good for the minor leagues, but not good enough for the majors, will use his time in Japan to prove himself once again in order to receive the shot at the major leagues that he deserves. .11 845 N 100 W SUITE 100 OREM if, - ' 4 I ii in li jSa""--. - WatTbTtllfiT'i (7mm, - - i ' wi'hthe Sprayed on lsrjT 1. . i.
