Show Standard-Examine- r Friday April 20 2001 3 Meet the wonderful wizards of Club Oz By MICHELLE STOKER Standard-Examine- r Sunset About Club Oz correspondent - it ail began years ago when Techmeyer was school and looking for new ways to expand his sociul life “Things to do for fun were limited” said Techmeyer of West Point “We’d hang out at friends’ houses but there was always something lacking” Thut’s when the idea for a place like Club Oz started to grow "It was kind of a dream at first" Techmeyer said “Then we found the space and it became rculistic We decided it was something this area needed” Club Oz a new social attraction with music and dancing for young people opened in February The target age for the club is and up to around 25 or basically anyone in high sch(X)l or college Since the club opened Techmeyer a manager said it’s been "extremely successful" “With other clubs it normally takes a much longer time to get the word out and the crowd size up" he said A group of people organized the club including Techmeyer and owners Tim Ryan of South Ogden and Tracy Ryan of Iziyton Techmeyer said the success is largely due to the uniqueness of Club Oz which has two dance fl(xrs one of them promoted as the largest dance fl(xr in Utah No other club in Davis or Weber counties caters to teens and young adults quite like this one does Another unique aspect of the club is the variety of music played each week Wednesday 16-1- 7 Club Oz is a dance club aimed at teenagers and college-agstudents e 1 Location: 2465 N Main No 4 in Sunset behind Riverton Music Hours: 8 pm-Wednesday 8:30 Thursday 9 pm-- l am l pm-- l am am Frlday'-Saturda- y Family night: 6 pm-- pm Monday $1 0famity $2person Ireeage 4 and under Admission: $5 Information: 9 525-138- 4 night is full of latino music Thursday is Techno & '80s Night (18 and older) and Friday and Saturday feature a mixture of and R&B (15 and older) hip-ho- p Club Oz also holds break-dancin- contests g Besides dancing there’s also a pxl table darts a pinball machine video games and a bar fully stocked with water fountain drinks popcorn and other snacks All of these attractions and one of the dance flixirs are located on the top level of the club The bottom level contains the other dance floor and restroom facilities “I likcithe disco ball the fog the neat lighting and the fun dancing partners" said Katie Chatelain a senior at Clearfield High Schcxri "I also enjoyed the "themes they have each week It adds variety to the club" Many high sehtxil students have never been clubbing said Techmeyer “My first time clubbing I was introduced to new dancing und new music" he said "It was a See OZ4 Sunset dance club: Like somewhere over the rainbow By KAMI BRONSON Standard-Examine- coneapondent L L We wish to welcome you to Munchkin Land" From first glance at Club Oz you begin to think that's exactly where you are - in a scene from “The Wizard of Oz” V The club can help keep little s y' I Kami Bronson TX -- Having a dub that’s open to a younger age group than the average club can be good or bad depending on what you’re looking at Vi $ cL: Jls Bear Rlvar High people out of trouble The first thing you do when you walk in is get checked for any illegal paraphernalia to make sure you don't bring any trouble inside The city curfew 11 pm for teens under age 18 is also enforced After 1 1 pm if you’re under 18 you aren’t allowed to hang around outside the club Although the ratio of younger people to older ones is higher if you go late enough at night most have gone of the home If more older people went the ratio of young to old would even out and no one would notice the younger teens are there Club Oz isn't crowded because there are two different dance fkxirs The one upstairs is mostly for break dancing Another great feature is the people who work there are very nice They interact well with those who come to the club If you want to go to Club Oz but don’t want to dance the whole time there's also a pcxil table and some arcade games to keep you occupied The lighting effects and music arc great to get you in the right nxxnl to "get your groove on" It's a good idea to go with a large group of friends if you aren't planning on meeting anyone there Tlsum things up this club is really fun but you can't Just judge it by lixiking at It You need to go there yourself and make It fun Kami Bronson Ls a senior at Bear River High School and a correspondent for the TX section |
