| Show Standard-Examine- Fnday Apnl 20 2001 r 9 T story of ‘Nico Coming-of-ag- e By STEVE SALLES Standard Examiner movie cntc Sexual experimentation is theme in motion these days - und for people trying to figure out what works best for thqm - but to take the approach of “Nico and Dani" seemed a little flippant to me Dani (Fernando Ramallo) is a who lives precocious with his wealthy parents in a Spanish seaside village They're off to Kgypt on holiday and Dani’s friend Nico (lordi Vilchcs) is coming to spend that time with his best buddy A little fishing some studying and are on the agenda for the boys Nico is ii little more focused - he wants to work on getting a motorcycle running and having sex with a girl - and not really particular about which one It just so happens two young beauties Fiona (Maneta Oroco) and Berta (Esther Nubiola) arc equally interested in the boys - so the games begin A housekeeper and a tutor are supposed to be around to prevent the kids from getting into any trouble but you know how that goes Slowly it’s revealed that Dani is more interested in Nico than he is in the girls He's continually dropping subtle hints that seem to elude lus friend - until they innocently fall asleep next to each other one night Now I don't remember ttxi like that when many sleep-over- s was a kid but Pm sure they & Dani’ took place and I'm sure they were just us frostily naive as this film portrays However what I find difficult to deal with is the wuy the girls were used like personal play toys for the Itovs’ amusement Fven- tunlly one of the kids decides to help himself to one of the young ladies while she's out cold - just because he's bored That to me was not playful innocence - it w as date rape plain ami simple From there on it's fairly tough to have compassion for 1 crosses the line these two young men who continue on their merry way as if Review nothing has happened This movie is being sold as a coming-of-agstory filled with guiltless adventure and pure intent but w hen it crosses the line these lardy Boys come off like spoiled brats bent on pure THE FILM Nico and Dam' OUR RATING STARRING: Fernando Ramallo Jordi Vilches Maneta Ororco and Esther Nubiola BEHIND THE SCENES ' Written and directed by Cesc Gay Hotel Room ) In Spanish with English subtitles PLAYING: Exclusively at the Tower Theatre in Salt Lake City Runs 90 minutes MPAA RATING: Not rated but 1 ( So sexual expcrimentajion on the willing?
