Letters To The Editor BANCROFT I Citizen Of West Side School District TO T5IE EDITOR: Are you aware that a problem exists in our schools? That this years enrollment in alU West Side district for the first grade ds 20 and that the total enrollment for the second grade ds 27? Do you know that the superintendent and school board considered two possibilities: 1. Combine the members of the first and second grades in each end of the district with one teacher in each school, or 2. Send all first grade students to Clifton and aU second 'grade students to Weston. That without advising the parents of aU concerned children, they decided on the latter? 'Do you knoiw that the West-on-JLinro- se area started a Weston-iLinros- e I pe- tition to have this reconsidered and were advised by the s uperin tendent that the boards decisions had never before been questioned in 15 years. That the board voted again With the trustees standing behind their members decision, but being outvoted? Do you know that within the last two weeks the citizens of the north end were appraised of the situation, a petition was circulated and that over 90 percent of the parents of the first and second graders signed the petition to keep their children in a combined first - second grade in their own school, that this petition was presented to the superintendent and board along with a discussion by several interested people, that a vote of the board was again called, that the two elected board members of the north end voted against the petition of the parents? Do you also know that this situation will in probability arise again several times in the next few years? Do you know that the two teachers involved have ex' pressed their willingness to teach the mixed classes? Do you realize that busing these children back and forth these distances in our own district is about the same as busing them to Preston where we would call for help in most emergency situations? (Doctor, Fire, Sheriff.) Do you know that our existing West Side high school plant is large enough to' accomodate 'our1 West Side grades Do you know that Preston high school has room to accomodate our high school students? Do you know that we are to vote on a bond issue to build a new West Side grade school when the above mentioned facilities are available? Do you know who should be responsible for the decisions concerning our children? Do you know whether your trustees will back your decisions? Do you know we can be 1-- NEWS Vickie Kaye Millward of Pocatello spent Saturday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fay Millward.
