Show In Our Opinion West Side School Bussing There is a group of people on the West that is somewhat disappointed with their representatives on the school board. The school board last week went ahead with plans to drop one first grade pins and one second grade class, transporting all the first graders to Weston and all the second graders to Clifton. The patrons of the district who object to this move say that teachers in each school are willing to take two grades at a time, (one class with first and second graders in it), there is no need to bus little kids that fair, and the school board members are not listening to what the parents want One parent even said, that as long as the district is bussing students why don't they bus them to the new grade school in Preston. (Distance has always been one of the objections to consolidation with the West Side and Side Preston.) The parent added that the district could also put all grades, one through eight, in the West Side high school building and then have the high school students go to Preston high. (Preston high school has ample room now that the junior high has been taken out of the building, and consolidation could be effected by the West Side board by sending the high school students over on a tuition basis.) However, the classic story I have heard recently came from lly Bennett. Greenawalt, in his statement, referred to the endorsement of a one per cent Rr jump made by Rep. Ernest Allen, Nampa, during the recent conference for school administrators and trustees held at Sun Valley. Allen, chairman of the House Education committee, said he doesnt feel the presmeets educational ent tax structure needs and indicated he would support a bill raising the sales tax from three to four per cent The chairman of the House Education committee also said at the Sun Valley meeting that he doesnt favor putting more of a burden on property owners and an increase in the sales tax would avoid this. Greenawalt, attacking Allens remarks, said the Nampa lawmaker shows an ignorance of taxation in Idaho. I wonder where Mr. Allen gets his idea that pronerty owners dont pay sales tax along with everyone else, Greenawalt said. Mr. Allen seems to forget that there is only one plaCe for the State of Idaho to get more taxes and that is from all of us, he added. In reports of the Sun Valley conference, there is not one reference to economy and more efficiency in education, he said. Greenawalt pointed out that Allen, during the last session of the legislature, endorsed public kindergartens. I dm not opposed to education but in first the positions taken by Mr. Allen in favoring kindergartens and next in fait clearly voring a sales tax increase shows me that it is time for some of our legislators to stop and consider what the taxpayer can afford and is willing to pay for education, not what he can be forced to pay for, Greenawalt emphasized. I believe it is time that our legislators are told who they are supposed to renot only the educators but all present who share the burden of high taxpayers he said. taxes, and With Inflation increasing prices with our economy in a turmoil, I do not believe this is the time for any sensible lawmaker to favor measures which would increase the tax burden. Demobilizing The Welefare Army By PAUL IIARVEY President Richard Nixon is daring to try to demobilize the professional welfare army. Actually, from that forum, he was appealing to you. Are you going to support him? Or will the silent ma' jority of taxpayers remain silent while that vocal, organized minority of freeloaders intimidate Congress and overwhelm him? In his toughest ever talk on any domestic issue, President Nixon says our current welfare system is a monu mental failure. He says the United States cannot afford a system under which working people can be made to feel like fools by those who will not work. He says Sts incredible that we penalize the fellow ' who does an honest days work and take his money to reward another person for doing nothing. He mentioned that under cur present welfare system, the loafer can collect more dollars (ban the worker. 'Recently at a White House conference on this subject, a woman on welfare jumped up and shouted, Dont talk to us about those menial jobs!" President Nixon, noting that unworthy protest, related that he has performed a few menial jobs in his own lifetime and he considers any honest work honorable work. lie says theres dignity in any honest job. And he specified that that goes for scrubbing floors or emptying bedpans. And he Is pleading with Congress to rewrite our welfare laws. Provide for the deserving needy, he says. But expect those able to work to register for and accept work or forfeit all welfare payments. He says his objective is to give bade to the American people the incentive and the opportunity to support themselves. Pres after-taxe- s plus A full line of Szktona&ed MATCHES . ' Please, honey, try this out for me. State Rep. Earl Greenawalt, SB - All of this may be a possibility. However, it was quite evident that the patrons of the West Side school district were not interested in consolidation, and if the district is to continue the high level of education that it has given in the past, certain economy measures must be effected. One of the luxuries of the district in the past has been the unusually small numbers in the grade school classes. This the hoard must have recognized in consolidating the two first grade classes. As for bussing, the patrons of the East-sid- e district did not find this impossible to live with, though it took several years to make them susceptible. Though this is quite an internal thing and the West Siders do not fully appreciate outsider suggesting, we would suggest that the district give the plan a try and see how it works. Though we thought that a two grade class wouldnt be a bad thing, this seems like a step backward, instead of forward. Maybe the district should go a step further, if the rooms In the school are big enough, and put all the first, second and third grades in one school and all the fourth, fifth and sixth, in the other. This has worked very successfully in the Eastside district. The transportation costs, which are paid primarily by the state, are not heavy on the district, but the savings in teacher costs are considerable. Tax Jump Hit said this week that a fellow lawmaker who has endorsed a one percent increase in the state sales tax shows a complete ana utter disregard of the plight of the Idaho taxpayer. THE CITIZEN Aug. 19, 1971 Whosinit WcH. As we say in the Missouri Ozarks, Mister President has shucked right down to the cob. Welfare has become a way of life for millions of Americans. Many families now have been four generations on relief. In Illinois right now every newspapr is metropolitan bulging with jobs begging for workers but the jobs go begging while the welfare rolls in this one state continue to increase 10,000 a month. A similar massive red ink hemorrhage is bankrupting New York, California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan. When any state tries to prune the welfare payroll, organized recipients cite 'federal law (as recently in Nevada) to get their dole reinstated. monster The was created by the politicians, of course, as they one another in buying votes with public money. I dont know if they can turn on that monster without being consumed by it, but lets you and I support the ones who dare to try. fire-breathi- O We have given or loaned billion to foreign countries since the Big War yet many of those countries with whom we have been most generous now are insulting Americans, undermining our currency, stealing our property and kidnapping our diplomats. But were not doing nothing about it. President Nixon is loosening the apron strings, tightening the purse strings, withdrawing the crutch from under our malingering allies. When other countries devalue our dollar in relation to theirs, it costs more American dollars to support our troops over there. So we' will support fewer troops over there. The Nixon doctrine calls for bringing home most of' our troops from Vietnam. Also from South Korea we will bring home 20,000 men by midyear. From Japan 12,000. From Thailand 9,000. From the Philippines 6,000. From Okinawa 5,000. Also, our businessmen have been Investing abroad too many American dollars.
