Russell, former superintendent super-intendent at Mottewan, accused of offering of-fering hlra $20,000 to Blgn a certttl-cato certttl-cato that Thaw was sane. Assistant District Attorney Vo-d said tho 'state would undertako to prove both countB of tho Indictment, first, that Anhut offered Dr. Hussell h bribe, nnd second, that Anhut aided aid-ed and abetted Thaw In an attempt to bribe Dr. Ilussell. Whllo ho was talking, Thnw sat In tho process server's room, Just off tbo court room where ho was twice tried for tho murder of Stanford Whlto. Under cross-examination Tnaw said that In all ho had spent $65,000 ana no mora In efforts to secure his release re-lease from Mattcowan. This sum, ho said, was cxcluslvo of tho expenses for his two trials for killing Stanford White. "I was pretty well swindled In my two trials hero," Thaw declared. Thaw declared that this agreement with Anhut called for tho return of all or part of tho $25,000 ir bo did not walk out of tho door of tho asylum asy-lum or was not released by tho court by specified dates. He said Anhut paid him back $14,700 of tho $25,000 January 1 last, when tho plan had failed. |
