Condition i iI I The commencement exercises of the i fourth academic year of the Latterday 1 Saints college were held at Social hall yesterday yes-terday mQrning A large number of spectators spec-tators were present and among those on the I stand wore President Vilford Woodruff and Secretary George Reynolds of the stake board Secretary William BDougall Bishop William THe of Manti Don C Young C E Mrs Zina D Young and 1 Mrs Zina Y Card The exercises were opened with the hymn Great God attend by the choir after which Instructor Newton Noyes offered of-fered prayer Nathan Gedge a student in the intermediate interme-diate department deliveredan address in behalf otthedepartment in which he paid a warm tribute to the faithfulness of the teachers Nathan Porter of the academic department depart-ment delivered an eloquent address on behalf be-half of the students of that department dwelling principally upon the general unity which has existed among the students stu-dents and between them and those of the lower departments The range or the subjects sub-jects treated in this department was spoken o the regulation requiring each student to pursue a certain variety of studies being particularly commended The natural result of such a regulation is that a abroad foundation will be laid lor future study The mutual interlacing of these branches and the hamony existing between the various courses were spoken of Clear lines have always been drawn between theory and fact that the students may not become confused But the chief feature to which reference could be made is the theological work performed which has had the effect of impressing upon the minds of the students that desire and zeal fr for study which is so necessary to the diligent dili-gent pupiL He closed by expressing the general satisfaction felt by the students of this department with the work performed during the year just closed This was followed by a well performed instrumental selection Heavenward by Miss Kate Rornnev Miss Amy Woolley then delivered an address ad-dress Our Lady Students which was well received t Instructor Joseph Nelson spoke upon the I subject of the Business Courses which have been under his care These courses have comprised the studies of bookkeep ing commercial law commercial arithmetic arithme-tic and high arithmetic and those who have passed the examinations prescribed have earned the special mention which will I be made of them during these exercises The courses named above were described I with some detail and the benefits of their I studios shown Instructor Willard Done followed with remarks bearing upon the course in literature litera-ture and history comprising the studies of English literature general history civil government and elementary German in which branches one student has passed Instructor Done also dwelt at some Ion I-on the practical exercises attendant upon the studies pursued during the year The idea has been maintained that nothing should be taught without being given a practical bearing upon the affairs of life The principal followed by reading the names of the following students who have successfully passed the course prescribed by the faculty as necessary to advance them irom the intermediate to the academic aca-demic department Emma Carroll Philip Maycock Emily Hillam Hattio Symons Nora l v heeler Frank Brown Jane Par rish Clare W Reid Nettie Davis and Donnette Smith Certificates were then presented to Frank Pomeroy and Alva Butler in the business course and to Laura Hyde in the course in literature and for the second term of the fourth academic year which began January 0 Ib90 and which ends tomorrow May 23 Hi9 THE ATTEXDVXCE during the term is represented by the following statistics Academic period covered cov-ered by my last report in two divisions In fatractor William Done has continued in charge of section A and Instructor Newton Noyes has presided in section B instructor Willard Croxall has devoted his attention to classes in each of these divisions Ashes been reported to you on a former occasions occa-sions we arc sufferirg a constrnt detriment from the fact that student1 apply for admission who arc entirely unqualified through lack of trinmg in elementary branches to pursue the lowest studies of this department Of necessity the passIng of test examinations has been made a requisite for entrance and upward of llfty hiAc been denied aumittauco during the proSt pro-St n t Uiool year through their inability to enter the intermediate classes It is to be sincerely hoped that institutions for preparatory study under the church school system will be estab f d Lbl J at an early day within this city THE ACADEMIC DErAllTilEXT has remained in charge of Instructor Joseph c son la accordance with the announcements through the annual circular for the fourth academic year the studies of this department have Been arranged in courses with reference to the haul graduation of the stupents Six such courses have been provided viz Physical Physi-cal science natural science mathematics business courses literature history and phonograph phon-ograph Throe students hare completed with success the business courses and one the courses in literature and history and these have this day received their certificates with varying degrees of ciicicncy The other courses in which no graduates at present appear have not been without their ardent devotees but many of these lines of study are long and arduous and v gnat time is required for the completion of the courses The principal has deemed it advisable 1 advisa-ble to recommend to students great caution in making applications for final examination lest they in some degree imbibe the idea that has proved itself so destructive to true progress in scholastic pursuits the belief that the securing secur-ing of documentary evidence of efficiency is itself it-self a guarantee of knowledge THE THEOLOGICAL EXERCISES have been conducted during the term with no essential variation from the methods previous reported Daily sessions of the theological classes have been held the exercise of which comprised lectures by the instructors and the study of assigned lessons In the standard works of the church and the answering of incidental questions upon subjects of general interest Testimony meetings have been held in each department de-partment at intervals of two weeks and students stu-dents have given ample proof of their sincere Interest in the exercises The monthly fastday has been regularly observed by appropriate exercises ex-ercises which on that day have taken the place of the recitation in theology The biweekly priesthood meeting and the weekly genera theological class have continued as heretofore with increasing interest Appropriate dcvo votlonal exercises comprising singing and prayer have been conducted at the opening and closing of each days session H We have been specially favored during the i term with valuable instructions from Elder George Eeynolds who has conducted Vr academic class in Book of Mormon study twico per week The gentlemans ability as an expounder ex-pounder of the Book of Mormon which is so Well known and so generally acknowledged among our people has been willingly and liberally lib-erally applied the assistance of our students in this importantpart thelrtheological study Our earnest thanks are due Elder Reynolds for his efficient aid According to their church standing the students stu-dents have been recorded as follows High satisfac-tion THC LADY SllTDEXIS have continued the labors of the ladies class under the careful direction of our lady superintendent superin-tendent Mrs Camilla Cobb The class has met i In two sections arranged according to the ages of the members Section A comprised eighty seven ladles and has heldduring the term twentyone lessons Dr Mettle I Hughes rendered very valuable assistance to the organization by delivering a series of six lectures upon the subject Personal Hygiene for Women Class B consisted of fourteen members all under the age of fifteen Of this division sixteen sessions have been held during the term JI THE STUDENTS SOCIETY has been conducted under the presidency of Instructor Done with Mss Auaa Ericlcson associated as-sociated as secretary Evening meetings have been held at the close of each week with but few ommissions There have been since the opening open-ing of the term fourteen such meetings at which nino lectures have been delivered and I five varied programmes oflitcrary and musical exercisesliavc been rendered Beside the members mem-bers or the faculty and many prominent studentsthe following have favored the society with lectuYcs upon special ilasses were conducted shortly before the close of the term The records kept the apparatus owned and used by tuff Institution and the library call for no spcc report additional to that made to you at the close of the preceding term IIIE BUILDINGS dt present occupied by the college afford but very inadequate accommodations for the departments depart-ments of the institution Wo feel that as far as the number of classes and the grades of study ire concerned we have practically reached the limit of our growth until more ample facilities are provided If additional room cannot bo secured se-cured for the coming year the advisability of dispensing with the lower divisions of the intermediate inter-mediate department should be considered In addition to those whose kind acts have been already referred tOUR < > OUR ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS are due the railway companies of this region notably the various branches of the Union Pacific Pa-cific system the Denver Rio Grande the Utah Central and the Salt Lake City railway for the privileges of reduced fares which have been extended ex-tended to our students under prescribed rules also to the proprietors and officials of the various vari-ous industrial and manufacturing establishments establish-ments in and around the city for numerous courtesies cour-tesies extended to the students in visiting such places for study and to the publishers during the term besides which a number of special meetings have been called as occasion required The record of the proceedings of this body are before you The class labors have been divided among the instructors as follows Elder George Reynolds two classes per week Lady superintendent Mrs C Cobb two classes per week Instructor Willard Croxall thirtyone class per week Instructor Newton Noyes thirtyone classes per week Instructor Joseph Nelson fortytwo classes per week Instructor Willard Done fortytwo classes per week Principal J E Talmage thirtyfive classes per week In addition to these formal appointment each member of the faculty has assumed soms branch ofjspecial labor Instructor Done has continued to serve as secretary of the faculty and president of the students society Instructo Nelson has acted as librarian and Instructor Noyes as assistant librarian Instructor Crox all has officiated as deputy treasurer and regis trar Mrs Cobb has devoted considerable at tenton aside from the appointed class sessions ses-sions to the welfare of the lady students placed I in her care Instructors Noyes and Croxall have tendered their resignations to take effect at the close 01 the present term These gentlemen bear with them into their new fields of occupation the i hearty good will and fraternal wishes of their present associates We trust that they will be as successful their future labors as they have been in the fulfillment of their duties in this Institution in-stitution u lUlIUsIU The work of the fourth academic year is now of the past The record of the same is open novr scrutiny and as justified by it criticism favorable favor-able or adverse must be looked for It is the unanimous opinion of the teachers that the year now closing has been a highly
